METRO Germany chooses the innovative all-electric Volta Zero

Volta Trucks, the all-electric commercial vehicle manufacturer and services provider has announced a cooperation with METRO Germany, a leading international food wholesaler that operates 102 wholesale stores and 11 delivery depots in Germany.

The 16-tonne all-electric Volta Zero will be initially deployed for METRO in North Rhine-Westphalia and will expand to Bavaria and Berlin when further vehicles join the fleet as METRO Germany plans to sustainably expand its delivery fleet.

Volta Trucks executives were guests at METRO Germany in Düsseldorf for the signing of the contract. “Volta Trucks is the ideal partner to start a more sustainable truck fleet, which METRO Germany is aiming for in the long term. By using the Volta Zero, which is specially designed for an urban environment, we are making a further contribution to environmentally conscious mobility and lower emissions”, explained Martin Schumacher, Chief Executive Officer of METRO Germany, at the contract signing ceremony at the METRO Campus in Düsseldorf.

Essa Al-Saleh, Chief Executive Officer of Volta Trucks, said: “I’m delighted that METRO Germany has selected Volta Trucks to implement the all-electric Volta Zero onto their urban delivery fleet and join us on the decarbonization journey. They will experience the many safety and environmental advantages that the zero-tailpipe emission Volta Zero will bring to their urban logistics, making our cities safer and more sustainable.”

The first 16-tonne Volta Zero will be deployed at the METRO depot in Neuss in August. “By Q4, five vehicles will be in use for METRO Germany,” says Frank Jäniche, Managing Director Sales at METRO Germany. “With a two-chamber refrigerated system, the Volta Zero trucks ensure strict cooling of the products and also offer a maneuverable and safe driving experience, especially in inner-city traffic. The large loading area makes it easier for us to deliver to our major customers in the food service industry.”

With the Volta Zero, Volta Trucks is pursuing the goal of revolutionising urban delivery traffic. The all-electric truck features a unique design that prioritises the safety of pedestrians and cyclists. The ground-up design features a low cabin, which provides the driver with 220 degrees of direct vision, with all-around visibility possible thanks to additional camera technology, putting the driver at eye-level with pedestrians and cyclists, helping to reduce the risk of collisions.
