Genesis GV90 Debuts as a New Flagship Luxury Electric SUV

Genesis has officially unveiled the GV90, its first full-size flagship SUV and one of the brand’s most ambitious electric vehicles yet. Revealed at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco on August 19, the GV90 combines a large 123.5-kWh battery, up to 657 horsepower, advanced air suspension and a technology-packed luxury interior.

Based on the 2024 Genesis Neolun concept, the GV90 represents the next step in the Korean automaker’s approach to electric luxury. Genesis says the SUV was developed around its “Son-nim” hospitality philosophy, treating occupants as honored guests while combining distinctive design, advanced technology and high levels of safety.

The GV90 is built on Genesis’ dedicated eMP (Electric Mobility Prime) platform for flagship vehicles. Its 127.8-inch wheelbase creates a spacious cabin with a flat floor and a slim cockpit design.

Power comes from a 123.5-kWh high-voltage battery, the largest battery fitted to a Hyundai Motor Group electric vehicle according to Genesis. The seven-seat GV90 is estimated to deliver approximately 310 miles of range on a single charge based on the company’s internal R&D testing.

Fast charging is also a major focus. When connected to a 350-kW DC fast charger, the GV90 can recharge from 10% to 80% in about 22 minutes.

The dual-motor powertrain produces a combined 657 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque, giving the large luxury SUV substantial performance while maintaining the smooth, relaxed driving character expected from a Genesis flagship.

The GV90 is also the first Hyundai Motor Group vehicle to use dual Electronic Limited Slip Differentials (E-LSDs). The system can distribute torque between the front and rear wheels according to driving conditions, improving traction and control on wet, snowy and uneven roads as well as during high-speed cornering.

Luxury SUV buyers typically expect a particularly smooth ride, and Genesis has equipped the GV90 with sophisticated suspension hardware to deliver it.

A multi-chamber air suspension system uses adjustable air springs to respond to road conditions, while electronically controlled dampers continuously adjust damping force. The system is designed to absorb road impacts while limiting excessive body movement.

The GV90 also gets active rear-wheel steering, with the rear wheels able to turn by up to five degrees. Genesis says the system can reduce the SUV’s turning radius to that of a midsize car, making parking and tight U-turns easier while improving stability at higher speeds.

GV90 Neolun Brings Coach Doors to Production

One of the most unusual versions of the new flagship is the GV90 Neolun.

It features the Neolun Arch Gate, which Genesis describes as the world’s first independently opening and closing hidden B-pillar coach-door system. The design allows the front and rear doors to open in a way that creates a particularly wide and unobstructed entrance.

A newly developed dual-motion hinge lets the rear doors first move outward before rotating open. This allows the doors to operate independently despite the hidden B-pillar structure.

Removing a conventional B-pillar could raise obvious safety concerns, but Genesis says the GV90 Neolun uses high-strength dual steel beams and a reinforced passenger-cell structure to maintain rigidity.

The cabin incorporates a concealed roll-cage structure using high-strength steel tubes, structural foam and a frame 1.5 times thicker than conventional construction. According to Genesis, the resulting structure achieves crash-safety performance equivalent to vehicles with conventional B-pillars.

12 Airbags and a World-First Roof Airbag

Safety is another major focus of the GV90.

The SUV has 12 airbags, including what Genesis describes as the world’s first roof airbag. During a severe rollover, the roof airbag deploys across the roof glass to help prevent occupant ejection and reduce injuries caused by contact with the roof.

The front seats also feature dual-depth airbags that deploy in stages depending on occupant posture. Seat-cushion airbags are designed to reduce submarining beneath the seatbelt, while curtain airbags extend protection to the third row.

Genesis has also strengthened the vehicle’s structure while using aluminum extensively to reduce weight. Ultra-high-strength steel is used in key areas, while the battery receives additional protection from a structure designed to redirect components underneath the vehicle during a frontal collision.

The battery itself incorporates Thermal Runaway Protection to help prevent heat from spreading between cells. A cloud-based battery management system can also monitor the battery in real time and identify potential abnormalities before they become more serious.

A Luxury EV Interior Designed Like a Lounge

The GV90’s interior is designed to feel more like a luxury lounge than a conventional SUV cabin.

The GV90 Neolun takes that concept even further with motorized front seats that can rotate 180 degrees while the vehicle is parked. This creates a face-to-face configuration intended for conversations or business meetings.

The Neolun Executive Suite uses a four-seat layout and adds a wood-finished floor with radiant heating inspired by Korea’s traditional ondol heating system. A comfort partition separates the passenger area from the luggage compartment, while roll blinds and a Smart Vision Roof provide additional privacy and flexibility.

The cabin can be specified with premium materials including natural wood, genuine stone and wool cashmere. Genesis offers five primary interior color combinations, while the Neolun gets its own selection of exclusive combinations.

23.6-Inch OLED Display and 25-Inch Head-Up Display

Technology plays a central role in the GV90. The flagship SUV uses a 23.6-inch OLED Cinematic Display that integrates the instrument cluster, navigation and media functions. When parked, the screen can extend upward by 90 mm, transforming into a 24.6-inch display for multimedia use.

Instead of relying solely on a traditional instrument cluster, Genesis also fits the GV90 with a 25-inch head-up display that projects driving information, navigation instructions and ADAS functions into the driver’s field of view.

The GV90 introduces Pleos Connect, Hyundai Motor Group’s next-generation infotainment platform based on Android Automotive OS. Third-party applications can be downloaded through the Pleos App Market.

An onboard generative AI assistant called Gleo AI allows occupants to interact with vehicle functions and search for information using natural conversation. Remote Smart Parking Assist 3 and Memory Reversing Assist add further automation for parking and maneuvering in tight spaces.

Bang & Olufsen Audio and Heated Windshield

Genesis has paid considerable attention to the sensory experience inside the GV90.

A 25-speaker Bang & Olufsen Premier 3D sound system with Dolby Atmos is designed to create an immersive listening environment. Features such as Virtual Venue and Beosonic allow occupants to customize the sound experience.

Ambient Glow mood lighting adds indirect illumination throughout the cabin, while the seats feature 15 individual air cells and pulse vibration functionality for an enhanced massage experience.

Another unusual feature is the metal-coated heated windshield. Rather than relying solely on conventional climate-control airflow, the windshield can generate heat to remove frost and condensation. Radiant heating elements are also integrated into areas around the first- and second-row seating.

Distinctive Korean-Inspired Exterior Design

The GV90’s exterior takes inspiration from the Korean moon jar, with Genesis emphasizing restrained proportions, smooth curves and minimal decorative elements.

The front features Wing Face Micro Lens Array headlights and the brand’s signature Two-Line lighting design. A three-dimensional G-Matrix chrome grille adds definition to the lower front fascia.

At 5,285 mm long, the GV90 has an imposing road presence. Large 24-inch forged wheels, sculpted fenders and clean body surfaces emphasize its flagship positioning.

The rear continues the minimalist theme, with flush-mounted taillights and minimal ornamentation. Genesis has even omitted a conventional rear spoiler to maintain the clean silhouette.

Buyers will have 16 exterior color choices, including 13 glossy finishes and three matte options.

GV90 Neolun First Edition

Genesis also unveiled a limited GV90 Neolun First Edition aimed at customers seeking an even more exclusive version of the flagship SUV.

The four-seat Executive Suite model receives a two-tone exterior, body-color 24-inch forged wheels and wool cashmere interior trim. Exclusive Genesis branding is incorporated into details such as the Crystal Sphere Controller, headrests and doorsteps.

Three two-tone exterior combinations will be offered for the First Edition, each paired with a specially selected interior color scheme.
