General Motors Defense unveiled its Electric Military Concept Vehicle (eMCV) at the Modern Day Marine 2023 trade show in Washington, D.C.
The eMCV is a military vehicle based on the GMC Hummer EV, utilizing the same Ultium platform and drivetrain. It features a 200-kWh battery powering three motors that generate 1,000 horsepower, with torque vectoring capabilities in the rear motors and a locking differential in the front motor.
The vehicle comes equipped with upgraded components such as Fox shocks, larger 37-inch tires, heavy-duty brakes, and redesigned front and rear bumpers to enhance approach and departure angles.
The eMCV’s tube chassis and absence of body panels reduce the weight compared to the retail GMC Hummer EV. However, modifications made for military purposes, which impact aerodynamic efficiency, result in a reduced range of 300 miles, down from the retail version’s 329 miles. Noteworthy features of the eMCV include a 46-inch gun ring and a swing side-arm mount. It also offers Silent Drive and Silent Watch driving modes, enabling stealthy operations with minimal noise.
The vehicle can be rapidly charged using a 350-kilowatt fast charger, providing 100 miles of range in just 12 minutes. Additionally, the eMCV functions as a series hybrid, incorporating a 12-kW diesel generator that offers limited charging and propulsion capabilities, beneficial for powering mission-critical equipment.
It’s worth noting that the Army previously acquired a commercial Hummer EV for evaluation. However, the eMCV was not specifically requested by the military. A GM Defense spokesperson explained that the vehicle was created to showcase possibilities and initiate discussions to shape future military requirements. The eMCV’s customization options and varying sizes provide the military with insights into potential adaptations for their specific needs.
