EU Electric Car Sales Surge as EV Market Share Reaches 21.7% in 2026

New car registrations across the European Union increased 5.3% year-to-date through August 2026, despite higher energy prices and continued geopolitical uncertainty. The biggest shift, however, is happening in the powertrain mix, with electric and electrified vehicles continuing to gain ground while petrol and diesel cars lose market share.

Battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for 21.7% of all new EU car registrations during the first eight months of 2026, up sharply from 15.8% during the same period last year.

Hybrid vehicles remained the most popular choice among European buyers, capturing 36.6% of the market. Plug-in hybrids also continued to expand, reaching a 10% share.

Meanwhile, the combined share of petrol and diesel vehicles dropped to just 29%, down from 37.5% a year earlier.

Battery-Electric Car Sales Continue to Accelerate

A total of 1,641,333 new battery-electric cars were registered across the EU between January and August 2026.

The increase was particularly strong in several of Europe’s largest EV markets. France recorded a remarkable 74.2% increase in battery-electric registrations, followed by Germany at 53.1% and Denmark at 40.9%.

Belgium also recorded growth, although at a more moderate 13.1%.

Together, France, Germany, Denmark and Belgium accounted for approximately 64% of all new battery-electric car registrations in the EU during the period.

The results highlight how quickly EV adoption is expanding in major European markets. A broader selection of electric models, combined with government incentives and other market support measures, continues to encourage consumers to move away from conventional gasoline and diesel vehicles.

Hybrids Remain Europe’s Most Popular Powertrain

Despite the rapid growth of fully electric cars, hybrid vehicles remain the largest segment of the European new-car market.

EU registrations of hybrid-electric vehicles reached 2,759,718 units through August 2026, giving hybrids a 36.6% market share.

Spain and Italy were among the strongest-performing major markets, with hybrid registrations increasing by 21% and 20.5%, respectively. Germany recorded 5.2% growth, while France increased by 1.8%.
Hybrids continue to appeal to buyers who want improved fuel efficiency without making the full transition to a battery-electric vehicle.

Plug-In Hybrids Gain More Ground

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles are also becoming a larger part of the European market.

EU registrations reached 758,082 units during the first eight months of 2026, giving plug-in hybrids a 10% market share, compared with 8.8% during the same period in 2025.

Italy recorded particularly strong growth, with plug-in-hybrid registrations rising 77.6%. Spain followed with a 33.9% increase, while Germany posted growth of 15.6%.

The numbers suggest that plug-in hybrids are benefiting from buyers looking for a combination of electric driving capability and the longer-range flexibility of an internal-combustion engine.

Petrol and Diesel Continue to Lose Market Share

The shift toward electrified vehicles is becoming increasingly visible in the declining market for conventional powertrains.

Petrol car registrations fell 18.6% across the EU through August 2026. All major European markets recorded declines, with France suffering the steepest drop at 35.8%.

Spain’s petrol registrations declined 18.5%, while Germany and Italy recorded declines of 21.9% and 16.7%, respectively.

Petrol cars accounted for 1,634,733 new registrations during the first eight months of the year, giving them a 21.7% market share. That compares with a 28% share during the same period in 2025.

Diesel continued its longer-term decline as well. New diesel registrations dropped 18.6%, leaving diesel with just 7.3% of the EU new-car market, down from 9.4% a year earlier.

EVs Are Reshaping the European Car Market

The latest EU registration figures show a clear change in consumer demand.

Battery-electric vehicles have increased their market share from 15.8% to 21.7% in just one year, while plug-in hybrids have also gained ground. At the same time, petrol and diesel vehicles have seen substantial declines.

With more electric models entering the market and incentives continuing to influence purchasing decisions, electrified vehicles are becoming an increasingly important part of Europe’s new-car market.

The first eight months of 2026 therefore point to a European auto market undergoing a significant powertrain transition, with hybrids still leading overall but battery-electric vehicles rapidly closing the gap.
