YANGWANG U9 Xtreme Just Broke the 500 km/h Barrier With a Stunning New World Record

BYD has pushed electric performance into uncharted territory after its luxury brand, YANGWANG, set a new world speed record with the all-electric U9 Xtreme hypercar. The electric supercar reached an astonishing 503.17 km/h (312.65 mph) in Abu Dhabi, becoming the first production car to officially surpass the 500 km/h barrier.

The achievement beats the previous record of 496.22 km/h (308.33 mph), set by the same vehicle in Germany in September 2025. It also establishes a new benchmark for electric production cars, demonstrating how far high-performance EV technology has advanced in just a few years.

The record-breaking run took place on November 1, 2026, along Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed International Road (E11) in Abu Dhabi’s Al Dhafra region. Professional racing driver Marc Basseng, who also piloted the U9 Xtreme during its previous record attempt, was behind the wheel.

The achievement earned the U9 Xtreme four Guinness World Records, covering the fastest production car, fastest electric production car, fastest EV tyre and fastest road car tyre. The record was also recognised by the FIA, motorsport’s international governing body.

BYD Yangwang U9 Xtreme Becomes the World’s Fastest Production Car

Breaking the 500 km/h barrier has been one of the automotive industry’s biggest challenges for decades. Until now, this territory has largely remained beyond the reach of production vehicles, particularly electric cars.

The YANGWANG U9 Xtreme managed to achieve what conventional combustion-powered production cars have struggled to accomplish, relying on four electric motors, advanced battery technology and sophisticated vehicle control systems.

BYD Executive Vice-President Stella Li praised the engineering team behind the project, highlighting how development continued even after the previous 496.22 km/h record was achieved.

The latest result represents a significant step forward for BYD’s ambitions in high-performance electric vehicles and puts the Chinese manufacturer in an increasingly exclusive position in the global hypercar market.

How the U9 Xtreme Reached 503.17 km/h

Reaching more than 500 km/h on a public road required much more than simply increasing motor power. The Abu Dhabi attempt involved extensive preparation, technical adjustments and careful coordination with local authorities.

A 10-kilometre section of road was made available for the event, including a seven-kilometre straight suitable for high-speed testing. Because the route was close to the desert and regularly used by traffic, the surface required extensive cleaning and inspection before the attempts.

The first two runs took place on October 31, with the U9 Xtreme reaching approximately 490 km/h.

Following those attempts, BYD engineers worked overnight to improve the vehicle’s setup. Several adjustments were made to maximise performance and stability:

– Suspension: The software was recalibrated to increase rebound damping and better manage road surface imperfections.
– Aerodynamics: The rear-wing angle was adjusted to generate additional downforce over the rear axle.
– Tyres: Pressure settings were fine-tuned to improve high-speed stability.
– Thermal management: Battery and motor temperatures were optimised before the next attempts.

Two additional runs followed on November 1. The first confirmed improvements in suspension, aerodynamics and tyre performance, while the second produced the record-breaking 503.17 km/h result.

Four Electric Motors Produce More Than 3,000 PS

At the heart of the YANGWANG U9 Xtreme is BYD’s upgraded e4 Platform, featuring four independently controlled electric motors.

Each motor produces up to 755 PS (555 kW), with a combined system output exceeding 3,000 PS. That is more than double the output of the standard YANGWANG U9, which produces 1,287 PS.

The motors can reach speeds of up to 30,000 rpm, making the U9 Xtreme one of the most technically advanced electric performance cars currently developed for production.

BYD achieved these figures through several advanced materials and engineering solutions, including ultra-thin 0.1 mm silicon steel in the motor stators, ultra-high-strength 970 MPa silicon steel in the rotors and aerospace-grade aluminium motor housings.

The result is an extraordinary power-to-weight ratio of 1,217 PS per tonne.

However, raw power is only part of the equation. The e4 Platform uses independent torque vectoring to continuously adjust power delivery to individual wheels more than 100 times per second.

This allows the vehicle to maintain traction and stability under extreme acceleration and cornering conditions, helping the driver control the enormous power available.

1200V Architecture and BYD Blade Battery Technology

One of the most significant upgrades over the standard U9 is the introduction of a 1200V high-voltage electrical architecture.

The U9 Xtreme is the first production model to feature this type of platform, moving beyond the 800V systems increasingly used in modern premium electric vehicles.

The new architecture supports current levels of up to 1,000 amperes, helping deliver the enormous power required by the four electric motors while improving electrical efficiency and thermal management.

BYD has retained its Blade Battery technology, which uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry. The battery has been further developed to handle the extreme discharge requirements of the hypercar.

According to BYD, the updated system delivers a 170% increase in single-cell power density compared with an 800V configuration and supports discharge rates of up to 30C.

This is particularly important because maintaining high power output at extreme speeds places enormous demands on battery temperature management and electrical performance.

Even with the battery at just 20% state of charge, the U9 Xtreme can reportedly deliver up to 1,800 kW of power.

The system also supports regenerative braking at rates exceeding 700 kW, helping recover energy while reducing the workload on the conventional braking system.

BYD says the 1200V architecture can reduce heat generation by up to 67% compared with an 800V system operating at the same power output.

Advanced Suspension Helps Keep the Hypercar Under Control

Producing more than 3,000 PS is impressive, but keeping a vehicle stable at speeds approaching 500 km/h is an entirely different challenge.

For this reason, the U9 Xtreme uses BYD’s DiSus-X Intelligent Body Control System, an advanced suspension technology designed to manage vehicle movement independently at each corner.

The system features dual-valve electronic dampers with a bandwidth exceeding 12 kN and can deliver up to 50 kN of active force within 120 milliseconds.

This allows the suspension to react rapidly to acceleration, braking and cornering forces.

The technology helps reduce body movement during hard acceleration and braking while maintaining tyre contact with the road. It can also generate a controlled inward body lean during cornering, reaching up to 2.43 degrees under specific conditions.

Combined with the e4 Platform’s independent torque control, the system helps the U9 Xtreme maintain stability and grip under extreme driving conditions.

Special Giti Tyres Developed for Extreme Speeds

The tyres were another critical part of the record-breaking project.

YANGWANG worked with Giti Tire to develop a specialised semi-slick tyre capable of handling the enormous forces generated at speeds exceeding 500 km/h.

The bespoke tyres feature an optimised rubber compound and specially designed tread pattern to improve grip, durability and stability.

Engineers also developed a solution to minimise tyre movement against the wheel rim during extreme acceleration and braking. A special knurling treatment at the rim interface, combined with high-viscosity lubricant, helps reduce slippage and torque loss.

The collaboration proved particularly important during the Abu Dhabi record attempt, where tyre performance was essential to maintaining stability at unprecedented speeds.

The tyres also earned their own Guinness World Records, becoming the fastest EV tyre and fastest road car tyre in the world.

From 309 km/h to More Than 500 km/h in Just Three Years

The development of the U9 Xtreme has been remarkably quick by automotive industry standards.

The original YANGWANG U9 first demonstrated its performance potential in January 2024, reaching 309 km/h at Wuhan Hannan Airport in China.

By October 2024, the standard U9 had increased that figure to 391.94 km/h during testing at Germany’s ATP Papenburg proving ground.

The more powerful U9 Xtreme arrived in August 2025 and immediately raised the benchmark to 472.41 km/h.

Just one month later, it reached 496.22 km/h, setting a new production-car speed record.

Now, the latest 503.17 km/h achievement puts the electric hypercar into an entirely new category.

The U9 Xtreme has also demonstrated its capabilities on a race circuit. It previously recorded a 6-minute 59.157-second lap of Germany’s Nürburgring Nordschleife, establishing a production electric vehicle lap record.

The combination of exceptional top speed and impressive circuit performance shows that the U9 Xtreme is not simply designed for straight-line acceleration.

BYD Yangwang U9 Xtreme Limited to Just 30 Units

Despite its record-breaking performance, the YANGWANG U9 Xtreme will remain an extremely exclusive vehicle.

BYD plans to produce just 30 examples worldwide, with each car receiving individual customisation based on the owner’s preferences.

The first production-standard example, named “Dawn Moment”, was unveiled at this year’s Beijing Auto Show.

Its distinctive finish incorporates ultra-fine gold powder sealed beneath multiple layers of clear coating. The result is a surface designed to reflect changing light, creating an effect inspired by morning sunlight passing through clouds.

The matte-gold sections also feature finishing techniques influenced by traditional Chinese lacquer craftsmanship.

Some customers have already approved their bespoke specifications and moved towards contract signing and production scheduling.
