Aston Martin Valhalla Spider PHEV Debuts as Brand’s Fastest Open-Cockpit Supercar

Aston Martin has unveiled the new Valhalla Spider, an open-top version of its mid-engined plug-in hybrid supercar that combines 1,079 PS, advanced Formula 1-inspired technology and a top speed of 217 mph (350 km/h). Building on the Valhalla Coupe, the Spider brings roof-off driving to Aston Martin’s first production mid-engined supercar while retaining its focus on high-speed performance, precise handling and everyday usability.

Described as the fastest open-cockpit Aston Martin ever produced, the Valhalla Spider is engineered to deliver the same high level of performance on the road and racetrack, whether its roof is fitted or removed.

Aston Martin Valhalla Spider Combines Open-Top Driving With Extreme Performance

The Valhalla Spider shares its core engineering with the Valhalla Coupe, including a carbon-fiber structure, a sophisticated plug-in hybrid powertrain and extensive active aerodynamics. Development involved close collaboration with Aston Martin Performance Technologies (AMPT), the consultancy arm of the Aston Martin Aramco Formula 1 team.

The partnership helped refine the Spider’s aerodynamics, vehicle dynamics and lightweight construction, adapting the Coupe’s performance-focused engineering for open-cockpit driving.

Aston Martin has developed a comprehensive roof system that preserves the supercar’s flowing design while providing flexibility in different driving conditions. A removable black fabric roof comes standard and can be stowed when conditions allow.

With the fabric roof installed, the Valhalla Spider can reach speeds of up to 124 mph (200 km/h). Buyers can also choose an optional carbon-fiber hardtop, which allows the car to reach its electronically limited maximum speed of 217 mph (350 km/h).

The Spider can also achieve its maximum speed with the roof removed, making it the fastest open-cockpit model in Aston Martin’s history.

Wind Management Keeps the Cockpit Comfortable at Speed

Removing the roof introduces aerodynamic challenges, particularly at the speeds the Valhalla Spider is designed to achieve. Aston Martin has addressed these issues with a dedicated wind deflector that manages airflow around the open cockpit.

The device redirects air from the top of the windscreen, helping draw cooling air toward the engine’s intake while directing airflow over the occupants for improved comfort.

The engine intake snorkel has also been redesigned specifically for the Spider. It sits 35 millimeters taller than the Coupe’s version to accommodate the revised airflow requirements.

When the roof is installed, the wind deflector folds into three sections and fits inside newly integrated 15-liter storage compartments in the side sills.

The car also receives revised active-aerodynamics and electronic stability control calibrations to account for the different airflow conditions with the roof fitted or removed. These adjustments help preserve predictable handling, stability and driver confidence.

1,079 PS Plug-In Hybrid Powertrain Delivers Hypercar Performance

Power comes from the same advanced plug-in hybrid system used in the Valhalla Coupe, combining a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 with three electric motors.

The V8 produces 828 PS, equivalent to approximately 817 hp, and delivers a specific output of 207 bhp per liter. Aston Martin identifies it as the highest-specific-output combustion engine it has produced.

Three electric motors contribute an additional 251 PS, bringing total system output to 1,079 PS and maximum torque to 1,100 Nm.

Two electric motors power the front axle, providing electric torque vectoring to improve agility and stability. The third motor is integrated with the eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, assisting the V8 in driving the rear wheels.

Because there is no mechanical connection between the front and rear axles, the powertrain can independently manage power delivery to the individual wheels. This arrangement gives the Valhalla Spider greater flexibility in balancing traction, cornering performance and stability.

Aston Martin’s Integrated Vehicle Dynamics Control system coordinates the powertrain, suspension, steering, braking and active aerodynamics. Working alongside four selectable driving modes, it continually adjusts the car’s behavior to suit the driving conditions and driver inputs.

The objective is to combine the immediate response and precision expected of a track-focused supercar with a more natural and approachable driving experience on public roads.

Active Aerodynamics Generate More Than 600 kg of Downforce

The Valhalla Spider retains the Coupe’s sophisticated active-aerodynamics system, which adjusts airflow across the body and underneath the car to balance downforce, grip and efficiency.

Movable aerodynamic elements at the front and rear work together to optimize the distribution of downforce between the axles. Depending on speed, driving conditions and the selected mode, the system can increase aerodynamic load for improved cornering stability or reduce drag when greater efficiency is required.

With the roof fitted, the Valhalla Spider can generate more than 600 kg of downforce. Aston Martin has recalibrated the system to maintain consistent aerodynamic performance in both roof-on and roof-off configurations.

Despite these changes, the technical differences between the Spider and Coupe remain relatively limited. Both models share the same fundamental powertrain, chassis architecture and vehicle-dynamics hardware, helping preserve the Valhalla’s core driving characteristics.

Carbon-Fiber Chassis and Revised Interior Details

At the center of the Valhalla Spider is a bespoke carbon-fiber tub developed with Aston Martin Performance Technologies. The structure uses composite-manufacturing techniques derived partly from Formula 1 engineering to deliver high rigidity, strength and low weight.

Its upper and lower sections are manufactured using a combination of resin-transfer molding and autoclave technology. The resulting passenger cell is designed to provide a strong foundation for precise handling and occupant protection without compromising interior packaging.

Aston Martin has also refined the Spider’s signature carbon-fiber dihedral doors. The doors retain their distinctive upward-opening movement but feature revised mechanisms for smoother operation and a frameless design. Slightly increased curvature along the upper edge of the door glass also improves access when the roof is fitted.

A new carbon-fiber Touring Seat comes standard, prioritizing comfort and easier entry and exit. Customers who prefer the more supportive carbon-fiber seat offered in the Valhalla Coupe can retain that option at no additional cost.

These details reflect the Spider’s dual purpose: delivering the excitement of an open-top supercar without sacrificing the practical considerations that make the car more manageable in everyday driving.

Aston Martin Valhalla Spider Builds on the Coupe’s Engineering

Aston Martin CEO Adrian Hallmark described the Valhalla Coupe as a landmark model for the company, introducing several major innovations, including its first production mid-engined supercar, first plug-in hybrid and first bespoke flat-plane-crank V8 paired with an all-new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The Valhalla Spider builds on that foundation by adding open-cockpit driving while retaining the Coupe’s performance-oriented engineering and distinctive design.

The result is a supercar designed to deliver high-speed capability, precise handling and the flexibility to enjoy the car with or without its roof. Its combination of hybrid power, Formula 1-inspired aerodynamics and carbon-fiber construction positions the Valhalla Spider as one of Aston Martin’s most technically ambitious road cars.

With 1,079 PS, 1,100 Nm of torque and a top speed of 217 mph, the Valhalla Spider demonstrates how electrification and advanced aerodynamic engineering can enhance the performance of an open-top supercar without compromising its focus on driver engagement.

For Aston Martin, the Spider is more than a roofless version of the Valhalla Coupe. It extends the capabilities of the brand’s first mid-engined hybrid supercar into a new driving experience while preserving the performance that defines the Valhalla name.
