UK Van Market Climbs 22% in July as Electric Van Sales Reach Record Market Share

The UK light commercial vehicle (LCV) market continued its strong momentum in July, posting its fourth consecutive month of growth as demand for electric vans reached an all-time high.

According to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), 28,578 new light commercial vehicles were registered during July, representing a 22.0% year-on-year increase. The strong monthly performance lifted total registrations for the first seven months of 2026 to 187,226 units, up 4.3% compared with the same period last year.

Large Vans Drive Market Growth

Growth was led by the country’s largest van segments.

Large vans remained the dominant category, with registrations rising 29.9% to 20,842 units. Medium-sized vans also delivered a solid performance, increasing 20.7% to 4,993 registrations.

Demand for 4×4 commercial vehicles surged 66.1%, reaching 1,030 units, while small vans recorded an 11.8% increase to 825 registrations.

Pickups, however, continued their prolonged decline. Registrations dropped 53.2% to just 888 units, marking the segment’s tenth consecutive month of falling sales. Pickups now represent only 3.1% of the overall LCV market.

The decline continues to be linked to changes in UK tax rules that reclassified double-cab pickups under Benefit-in-Kind and capital allowance regulations, reducing their appeal for businesses and fleet operators.

Electric Van Registrations Jump 74%

Battery electric vans delivered the standout performance of the month.

BEV registrations surged 74.1% year over year, giving electric vans a record 14.7% share of the overall UK LCV market—the highest level ever recorded and the strongest monthly result since August 2025.

Year-to-date, electric vans now account for 10.6% of all new LCV registrations. While this marks the first time the segment has achieved a double-digit annual market share, it remains well below the UK’s 24% zero-emission vehicle target for 2026.

The figures suggest businesses are increasingly embracing electric commercial vehicles, although adoption is still progressing more slowly than policymakers had anticipated.

Growth Expected to Moderate

Despite the recent surge, SMMT expects overall van market growth to slow during the remainder of the year.

The industry body now forecasts approximately 316,000 new light commercial vehicle registrations in 2026, representing only modest annual growth of 0.2%.

Electric vans are expected to continue outperforming the broader market, with BEVs forecast to account for 11.5% of registrations this year before rising to 15.9% in 2027. Even so, adoption is projected to remain roughly two years behind the government’s mandated trajectory.

Challenges Continue to Slow Fleet Electrification

Although manufacturers have significantly expanded the number of electric van models available, several barriers continue to limit wider adoption.

Higher purchase prices remain a major concern for fleet operators, while the UK’s public charging network still lacks sufficient infrastructure to fully support commercial vehicle operations. Rising operating costs and broader economic pressures are also influencing purchasing decisions.

Industry leaders continue to call for regulatory reforms that better reflect current market conditions. They argue that more realistic zero-emission targets, alongside supportive taxation and infrastructure investment, would accelerate fleet renewal while strengthening the UK’s competitiveness in the commercial vehicle sector.

Commenting on the latest figures, SMMT Chief Executive Mike Hawes said the continued growth demonstrates the resilience of UK operators and ongoing investment across the sector. He added that record electric van uptake shows businesses are willing to transition to zero-emission vehicles when commercial conditions are favorable, but warned that high upfront costs, charging infrastructure limitations, and tax policies affecting pickups continue to hold the market back.

As the UK works toward its net-zero transport goals, the pace of commercial vehicle electrification is expected to depend not only on expanding model availability but also on government policies that make zero-emission vans a more practical and financially attractive choice for businesses.
