MOIA Launches Autonomous ID. Buzz Ridepooling Service in Hamburg

MOIA has launched public pilot operations of its autonomous all-electric ID. Buzz ridepooling service in Hamburg, giving selected residents the opportunity to experience self-driving mobility as part of the German-funded ALIKE project.

The launch marks an important milestone for autonomous mobility in Europe, moving beyond controlled testing toward real-world passenger operations. The project is designed to demonstrate how self-driving, on-demand transportation can complement existing public transit networks while helping shape the future of urban mobility.

Initially, pre-registered Hamburg residents can book rides in autonomous Volkswagen ID. Buzz electric vehicles through the MOIA app, with support for the hvv switch app expected soon. The pilot service currently operates in selected parts of Winterhude, Barmbek, and Wandsbek.

During the trial phase, rides are offered free of charge and every vehicle carries a trained safety operator while the technology continues to be validated under real-world conditions. Up to ten autonomous ID. Buzz vehicles will participate in the pilot program.

Autonomous Ridepooling Designed for Public Transport

The Hamburg initiative is part of the ALIKE project, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Transport. The project explores how autonomous ridepooling services can work alongside buses and trains, offering passengers an additional convenient and sustainable transportation option.

Like MOIA’s existing ridepooling service, passengers traveling in similar directions share a vehicle, while pickups and drop-offs take place at designated virtual stops. This model is intended to improve transport efficiency, reduce congestion, and make better use of shared electric mobility.

Patrick Schnieder, Germany’s Federal Minister for Transport, said autonomous driving has the potential to significantly improve quality of life while strengthening public transportation. He noted that projects such as ALIKE provide valuable practical experience that will help shape the future of mobility across German cities and regions.

Hamburg Senator for Transport and Mobility Transition Anjes Tjarks described the city as an ideal testing ground for innovative mobility solutions, saying the project represents an important step from research into everyday use of autonomous transportation.

European Technology Platform for Autonomous Mobility

The autonomous ID. Buzz fleet is powered by MOIA’s integrated technology platform, which combines the Volkswagen ID. Buzz AD, Mobileye’s automated driving system, fleet management software, Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) capabilities, and operational tools into a single ecosystem.

Beyond the vehicles themselves, the platform also includes fleet management, operator training, and deployment support, allowing public transit agencies and private fleet operators to introduce autonomous mobility services more efficiently.

According to MOIA CEO Sascha Meyer, the first passenger operations in Hamburg represent a major milestone for the company’s European autonomous mobility platform. Data collected during real-world service will be used to further improve the technology before expanding into additional markets.

Hamburg Serves as the Launchpad for Global Expansion

The Hamburg pilot also plays a central role in MOIA’s international growth strategy.

The company is preparing additional autonomous passenger pilot programs in Germany, Norway, and the United States, allowing its technology to be tested across a wide range of operating environments before commercial deployment.

Earlier this year, MOIA also announced a partnership with U.S.-based mobility provider Beep to deploy up to 5,000 autonomous electric shuttle vehicles for public transportation over the next decade, highlighting the company’s ambitions to scale autonomous mobility globally.

ALIKE Project Brings Multiple Partners Together

ALIKE is led by Hamburg’s public transport operator HOCHBAHN and brings together several organizations, including MOIA, HOLON, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), and Hamburg’s Ministry for Transport and Mobility Transition.

The project is developing two integrated autonomous on-demand mobility services. Following MOIA’s launch of autonomous ID. Buzz operations, the next stage will see HOCHBAHN begin testing autonomous HOLON vehicles as part of the broader initiative.

Regulatory Progress Supports Autonomous Deployment

The expansion of autonomous mobility is also being supported by evolving international regulations.

The recently adopted UNECE regulation for fully autonomous driving systems establishes internationally harmonized safety requirements for autonomous vehicles. Pilot programs such as ALIKE are expected to provide regulators, manufacturers, and mobility providers with valuable operational data needed to support future large-scale commercial deployment.

As autonomous ridepooling moves from experimental testing toward everyday transportation, Hamburg is emerging as one of Europe’s most important proving grounds for the next generation of shared electric mobility.
