Volkswagen has issued a major recall affecting close to 100,000 electric vehicles after identifying a potential issue with high-voltage battery modules that could impact both performance and safety.
According to Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), the recall covers approximately 75,000 Volkswagen ID models and around 20,000 units of the Cupra Born. The affected vehicles were produced between February 2022 and August 2024.
What’s the Issue?
The problem centers on battery modules that may not meet required specifications. In some cases, this defect could result in reduced driving range. More critically, regulators warn there is a potential fire risk, although no incidents involving injuries or property damage have been reported so far.

Fix: Software Update and Hardware Inspection
Volkswagen plans a combined fix involving both software and hardware measures. Owners of affected vehicles will be asked to visit authorized dealerships, where technicians will install a software update to improve battery monitoring, conduct a full inspection of the high-voltage battery system and replace individual battery modules if defects are detected.
