Volkswagen has reached a major landmark in its electrification journey, delivering its two millionth all-electric vehicle to customers worldwide.
The milestone car – an ID.3 – rolled off the production line at the Zwickau plant and was handed over at the Transparent Factory in Dresden.
The achievement underlines the rapid growth of Volkswagen’s EV strategy and reinforces the brand’s leading position in Germany and across Europe’s competitive electric vehicle market.
From e-up! to ID. Family: Volkswagen’s EV Evolution
Volkswagen’s modern EV journey began in 2013 with the introduction of the Volkswagen e-up!, followed by the Volkswagen e-Golf. These early battery-electric models laid the foundation for what would become the fully electric ID. family.
Since the launch of the Volkswagen ID.3 in 2020, Volkswagen has scaled up production significantly. Today, the brand ranks among the highest-volume electric car manufacturers globally and holds a particularly strong position in the German and wider European BEV markets.
Martin Sander, Volkswagen Board Member for Sales, Marketing and After Sales, described the milestone as proof of the brand’s long-term commitment to electrification and its competitive electric portfolio.
The Core of Volkswagen’s Electric Success
Three key models have driven Volkswagen’s electric growth:
Volkswagen ID.3 – Over 628,000 Deliveries: The Volkswagen ID.3 was the first model built on Volkswagen’s dedicated MEB electric platform. Positioned in the compact hatchback segment, it made all-electric driving more accessible to mainstream customers. A further product upgrade is expected soon, ensuring the model remains competitive in Europe’s fast-moving EV market.
Volkswagen ID.4 – Nearly 901,000 Deliveries: The Volkswagen ID.4 has become the brand’s global EV powerhouse. Popular not only in Europe but also in China and the United States, the ID.4 has played a crucial role in expanding Volkswagen’s international electric footprint.
Volkswagen ID.7 – Over 132,000 Deliveries: The Volkswagen ID.7 and the estate Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer extend the ID. range into the upper mid-size segment. With long range, high efficiency and advanced technology, the ID.7 demonstrates Volkswagen’s push to bring premium electric mobility to new customer groups.
Affordable EVs: The Upcoming ID. Polo
Looking ahead, Volkswagen is preparing to broaden access to electric mobility further. The Volkswagen ID. Polo will be one of four new electric models set to launch from 2026 in the small car and compact segments.
Targeting the high-volume market, the ID. Polo is expected to strengthen Volkswagen’s position in affordable EVs – a crucial battleground in Europe as manufacturers compete to deliver lower-cost electric cars for everyday drivers.
Zwickau and Dresden: The Heart of Volkswagen’s EV Push
Production of the milestone ID.3 took place at Volkswagen’s Zwickau plant, one of the brand’s main electric vehicle manufacturing hubs. In 2025 alone, around 212,000 electric cars rolled off the line there.
Meanwhile, the Transparent Factory in Dresden has evolved into a major EV delivery and brand experience centre. Last year, around 3,500 vehicles were handed over to customers at the site, with more than 90% being electric or hybrid models. It now ranks as Volkswagen’s second-largest delivery centre in Germany, behind Autostadt Wolfsburg.
Customers can also test drive the full ID. range in Dresden, helping accelerate EV adoption by offering first-hand experience of Volkswagen’s electric technology.
Volkswagen’s Next Growth Phase in Electric Mobility
Reaching two million electric vehicle deliveries is more than a symbolic milestone for Volkswagen. It signals momentum in the brand’s transformation towards an all-electric future and highlights the growing demand for EVs across Europe and beyond.
With the ID.3, ID.4 and ID.7 firmly established – and more affordable electric models on the horizon – Volkswagen is positioning itself to capture the next phase of growth in the global EV market.
