Volkswagen ID.4 and Volkswagen ID.5 continue to strengthen their position in the electric SUV segment with a comprehensive round of upgrades.
The latest improvements bring increased battery capacity, stronger performance, and added technology—while keeping both models eligible for the UK Government’s electric car grant.
More Range and Stronger Performance
Selected trims across both lineups now benefit from batteries with higher usable capacity, delivering longer driving ranges and improved efficiency. Performance has also been enhanced, particularly in all-wheel-drive variants.
The ID.4 Pro 4MOTION now produces up to 299 PS and offers a WLTP range of up to 341 miles, making it a more compelling option for buyers seeking both power and long-distance usability. Meanwhile, GTX variants receive optimized battery setups that slightly reduce net capacity but maintain output while improving overall efficiency, resulting in modest range gains.
Importantly, many of these upgrades are introduced with little or no increase in price, improving overall value.
V2L and Bi-Directional Charging Arrive
One of the most notable additions is vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality. With optional adapters, both models can now supply power directly from the battery to external devices. This feature is particularly useful for outdoor activities, job sites, or emergency backup scenarios.
Bi-directional charging capability also opens the door for future energy integration possibilities, including home energy use.
Interior and Technology Improvements
Volkswagen has addressed user feedback with several meaningful cabin and tech updates. Physical buttons return to the steering wheel, improving usability over touch-sensitive controls.
Driver assistance and infotainment systems have also been refined. Traffic Assist now includes Front Cross functionality to better detect pedestrians and cyclists, while the infotainment system and driver attention monitoring have been upgraded for smoother operation.
Wireless charging power increases significantly—from 5W to 15W—making it more practical for modern smartphones. Additionally, USB-C ports with power delivery in the ID.5 can charge larger devices like laptops at up to 45W.
Practical Enhancements and Equipment Upgrades
Efficiency improvements extend to hardware, including a more effective optional heat pump that helps preserve range in colder conditions.
For towing, the ID.4 Pro 4MOTION now offers a higher braked trailer capacity of 1,800 kg, up from 1,200 kg, enhancing its practicality.
Across the range, trims receive equipment upgrades. Entry-level versions now come with larger 19-inch wheels, while mid-tier trims gain features such as an electric tailgate. An optional 230-volt socket adds further versatility for powering external devices.
Proven Electric SUV Lineup
Since its launch in 2021, the ID.4 has played a key role in Volkswagen’s global EV strategy and was named World Car of the Year shortly after release. The ID.5 followed in 2022 as a more style-focused SUV-coupé alternative, offering similar underpinnings with a sleeker design.
Both models are currently offered in multiple trims, covering a wide range of needs—from entry-level efficiency to high-performance GTX variants.
Pricing and Availability
The updated ID.4 and ID.5 start from £36,995 in the UK. Crucially, both models remain eligible for the Government’s electric vehicle grant, further enhancing their appeal in an increasingly competitive electric SUV market.
With improved range, smarter features, and broader usability, the latest updates ensure the ID.4 and ID.5 remain among the most well-rounded electric SUVs available today.
