Hyundai and Kia Invest in Qnovo to Boost EV Battery Intelligence and Safety

California-based battery software specialist Qnovo has secured a strategic investment from Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Corporation, deepening a multi-year collaboration focused on next-generation EV battery management.

The move signals a growing shift among global automakers toward software-defined battery intelligence as a competitive differentiator in electric mobility.

Software at the Core of EV Performance

Qnovo, headquartered in Silicon Valley, has built its reputation on AI- and machine learning-powered battery management software that delivers real-time insights into battery health and performance. The company claims up to 99% accuracy in detecting potential safety issues.

Unlike hardware-heavy solutions, Qnovo’s scalable, hardware-free architecture provides a verifiable digital accounting of battery health. For automakers, that means the ability to:

– Maximize battery performance and safety in real time
– Support more precise warranty underwriting
– Unlock true residual battery value across the vehicle lifecycle

As EV adoption accelerates globally, battery performance, affordability and long-term reliability remain critical barriers to mass-market electrification. Intelligent battery software is increasingly viewed as a key solution.

A Rapidly Expanding Battery Market

According to the International Energy Agency in its Global EV Outlook 2025, global battery demand across electric vehicles and energy storage systems is expected to quadruple to more than 4,000 GWh (4 TWh) by 2030.

Batteries now underpin not only battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids, but also grid storage, renewable energy systems, urban rail networks and industrial applications. As volumes scale, ensuring safety, reliability and lifecycle transparency becomes even more critical.

Years of Validation Testing

The investment follows several years of joint validation testing between Qnovo and Hyundai and Kia. According to the companies, Qnovo’s physics-based predictive algorithms have undergone extensive real-world validation, demonstrating compliance with the stringent reliability standards required by global OEMs.

“Partnering with Qnovo enables us to integrate leading battery intelligence into our EV platforms,” said Chang Hwan Kim, Executive Vice President of Hyundai Motor Company. “Qnovo’s approach aligns with our vision for a future where software drives customer experience and vehicle longevity.”

For Qnovo CEO Nadim Maluf, the partnership underscores the strategic importance of advanced battery intelligence in shaping charging performance and overall driving experience. “We are creating a new standard for how batteries are managed, valued and scaled globally,” he said.

Battery Intelligence as a Strategic Differentiator

Hyundai and Kia’s backing reflects a broader industry pivot: as EV architectures evolve toward software-defined vehicles, battery intelligence is no longer just an engineering function — it is a strategic asset.

Beyond optimizing range and safety, advanced battery analytics can help automakers:

– Improve total cost of ownership
– Enable secondary battery markets
– Strengthen consumer confidence in used Evs
– Support autonomous and robotics platforms that depend on reliable energy systems

Hyundai and Kia now join an established roster of Qnovo investors, including Blue Earth Capital, BorgWarner, Climate Investment, Constellation, RockPort Capital and US Venture Partners.

As global electrification accelerates, partnerships like this highlight a clear trend: the future of EV competitiveness may be defined less by battery chemistry alone — and more by the intelligence managing.
