Volkswagen has launched one of its most aggressively priced electrified cars yet in China. The new Volkswagen ID. Era 5S is a plug-in hybrid sedan with up to 160 km (99 miles) of electric-only range, fast charging and advanced driver-assistance technology — with a limited-time starting price of just 89,900 yuan, or roughly $13,400.
Unveiled at the 2026 Chengdu Auto Show, the ID. Era 5S is the second model in Volkswagen’s China-specific ID. Era family. Developed and built through the SAIC-Volkswagen joint venture, the sedan is designed specifically for a Chinese market where domestic automakers have pushed the price of electrified vehicles lower while packing them with increasingly sophisticated technology.
The aggressive pricing makes the ID. Era 5S particularly interesting. It costs roughly the same as some conventional gasoline sedans in China, despite offering plug-in hybrid technology, a sizable LFP battery and up to 160 km of CLTC electric range.
Volkswagen ID. Era 5S: Price and Positioning
The ID. Era 5S is offered in five trim levels. Its regular pricing ranges from 119,900 yuan to 149,900 yuan, but SAIC-Volkswagen is offering limited-time launch pricing that brings the starting price down to 89,900 yuan ($13,400).
The promotional prices extend through the five versions at 89,900, 99,900, 109,900, 114,900 and 119,900 yuan.
That places the ID. Era 5S in a price bracket normally associated with compact gasoline cars and affordable domestic new-energy vehicles.
It also puts Volkswagen directly into competition with Chinese plug-in hybrid sedans such as the BYD Qin family and Geely’s Galaxy models, where buyers increasingly expect a combination of low running costs, long range and a generous technology package.
For Volkswagen, the pricing strategy is significant. The company is competing in a Chinese market where domestic brands have become extremely aggressive on both price and equipment.

160 km of Electric Range From a 19.1-kWh Battery
Unlike most Volkswagen models carrying the ID. name outside China, the ID. Era 5S is not a pure electric vehicle. It uses a plug-in hybrid powertrain combining a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated gasoline engine with a 130-kW (174-hp) electric motor.
The gasoline engine produces 80 kW (107 hp), while the electric motor drives the front wheels through a single-speed DHT transmission.
Power comes from a 19.1-kWh LFP battery supplied by Rept Battero Energy, giving the sedan a claimed 160 km (99 miles) of CLTC electric range.
That is enough for many daily commutes to be completed without using gasoline, while the combustion engine provides additional flexibility for longer trips.
The ID. Era 5S supports both AC and DC charging. DC fast charging can take the battery from 30% to 80% in approximately 15 minutes.
The car also supports vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality with up to 3.5 kW of output, allowing the battery to power external electrical equipment.

A Technology-Focused Interior
Inside, Volkswagen has designed the ID. Era 5S around the technology expectations of the Chinese market.
A 15.6-inch central touchscreen dominates the dashboard, while an 8.8-inch digital instrument display provides information directly ahead of the driver.
Connectivity includes Apple CarPlay, Huawei HiCar and CarLink, while a six-speaker audio system is standard.
The cabin also uses a column-mounted gear selector, freeing up space around the center console for storage, cupholders and smartphone holders.
Higher trims add more premium equipment, including heated and ventilated front seats, rear-seat heating and a 16-speaker sound system.
Another unusual feature is the ability to fold the front seats into a configuration that can create a flat sleeping area, adding some versatility for longer journeys.
Level 2 Driver Assistance and City Navigation
Technology is not limited to the infotainment system.
The ID. Era 5S is Volkswagen’s first sedan to offer Navigation-on-Autopilot (NOA) in China. Higher trims feature Level 2 driver-assistance capabilities developed with partners including Momenta, Carizon and Horizon Robotics.
The system can assist with functions such as lane changes and automated parking.
That is an important addition because Chinese EV and PHEV buyers have increasingly come to expect sophisticated driver-assistance systems even in relatively affordable vehicles.
It also shows how Volkswagen is adapting its China-specific products to local consumer expectations rather than simply bringing versions of its European or North American models to the market.

A large sedan combining plug-in hybrid capability, nearly 100 miles of electric range, fast charging and advanced driver assistance for around $13,400 is a difficult proposition for many automakers outside China to match.
