BYD is pushing the boundaries of electric-car value once again with the new Da Han, a full-size flagship sedan that combines luxury-car technology, an enormous driving range and ultra-fast charging at a starting price of around $37,000 in China.
The BYD Da Han has entered pre-sales in three configurations, with prices ranging from 249,900 yuan ($37,170) to 299,900 yuan ($44,605). Even the entry-level version comes with features that are typically associated with much more expensive luxury EVs, including dual-chamber air suspension, rear-wheel steering, LiDAR-based driver assistance and a premium multi-speaker audio system.
BYD Da Han Price and Trims
The Da Han is available in three trims at launch:
| Model | Drivetrain | Price in China | CLTC Range |
| Da Han RWD Premium | RWD | 249,900 yuan ($37,170) | Up to 1,008 km (627 miles) |
| Da Han RWD Flagship | RWD | 269,900 yuan ($40,145) | Up to 1,008 km (627 miles) |
| Da Han AWD Flagship | AWD | 299,900 yuan ($44,605) | Up to 880 km (547 miles) |
The headline figure is the entry-level model’s claimed 1,008 km (627 miles) of CLTC range. The all-wheel-drive flagship sacrifices some range for significantly more performance, with 570 kW (764 hp) of combined output.
The AWD Da Han can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.8 seconds and reach a top speed of approximately 168 mph.
As always, CLTC figures are measured under China’s testing procedure and should not be directly compared with EPA-rated range figures in the United States.
A 627-Mile EV With a 102-kWh Battery
The Da Han’s range comes from a 102.326-kWh battery pack.
The single-motor rear-wheel-drive version uses an electric motor producing up to 370 kW (496 hp), while the dual-motor AWD flagship increases output to 570 kW.
The combination of a large battery and relatively efficient powertrain allows the RWD model to achieve its impressive 1,008-km (627-mile) CLTC range.
But range isn’t the only headline feature.
Perhaps the most remarkable specification is BYD’s Flash Charging technology.
According to BYD, the Da Han can charge from 10% to 97% in approximately nine minutes. That’s an unusually short charging stop for an EV with a battery of more than 100 kWh and could make long-distance electric travel considerably more convenient.
Actual charging times will depend on charger capability, battery temperature and other conditions, but the technology highlights the rapid pace of EV charging development in China.
Luxury Features at a $37,000 Starting Price
The Da Han is positioned as a flagship model, and its equipment list reflects that.
All versions receive BYD’s DiSus-A dual-chamber air suspension, which can increase ground clearance by as much as 100 mm. Rear-wheel steering reduces the turning radius to just 4.95 meters, making the large sedan easier to maneuver in tighter spaces.
The car also features a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor as part of BYD’s DiPilot 300, also known as the “God’s Eye B” driver-assistance system.
The system supports Navigate on Autopilot-style functions that can handle much of the driving between destinations, although the driver remains responsible for monitoring the road and taking control when necessary.
Inside, the Da Han takes a distinctly premium approach.
Depending on the configuration, the sedan can have up to 31 speakers, with 25 speakers offered as standard. Other features include real-wood trim, soft-closing doors, electrochromic rear windows, a head-up display and a three-screen dashboard incorporating a digital instrument cluster, central touchscreen and front-passenger display.
Full-Size Dimensions and Flagship Design
The BYD Da Han measures 5,256 mm (207 inches) long, 1,999 mm (78.7 inches) wide and 1,510 mm (59.4 inches) tall, riding on a 3,130-mm (123.2-inch) wheelbase.
The exterior follows BYD’s latest Dragon Face design language, featuring slim headlights, a distinctive front chrome element known as “Dragon Whiskers” and semi-hidden door handles.
Buyers can choose from five exterior colors: silver, green, red, beige and black. Four colors can also be paired with a contrasting roof. The sedan rides on 20- or 21-inch wheels with floating center caps.
How Does the BYD Da Han Compare With U.S. EVs?
The Da Han’s specifications underline the differences between China’s highly competitive EV market and the U.S. market.
At around $37,000, the entry-level Da Han offers a combination of more than 600 miles of claimed CLTC range, air suspension, rear-wheel steering, LiDAR and an extensive premium audio system.
For comparison, a similarly priced Tesla Model 3 in the U.S. offers significantly less EPA-rated range and does not provide the same combination of flagship hardware.
The Hyundai Ioniq 6 is another electric sedan competing in a similar general price territory, but it also doesn’t match the Da Han’s combination of battery capacity, air suspension, LiDAR hardware and charging claims.
However, the comparison needs an important qualification: the Da Han’s Chinese pricing cannot simply be converted into an equivalent U.S. retail price. Import costs, tariffs, distribution expenses, taxes, regulatory requirements and market positioning could dramatically change the price if BYD ever brought the model to America.
For now, the Da Han is a demonstration of what Chinese automakers can offer in their home market at prices that would be difficult to match in many other regions.
A Plug-In Hybrid Da Han Is Also Coming
BYD isn’t limiting the Da Han lineup to fully electric power.
A plug-in hybrid version is planned for the future, featuring a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine producing 115 kW (154 hp).
The entry-level PHEV combines the engine with a 200-kW (268-hp) electric motor and a 54.489-kWh LFP battery. BYD says this version will offer up to 470 km (292 miles) of electric-only driving.
A more powerful dual-motor all-wheel-drive version is also planned, with combined electric-motor output of 400 kW (536 hp).
