Chinese New Energy Vehicle (NEV) giant BYD saw a month of mixed fortunes in October. While the company achieved its highest monthly sales of the year with a robust performance compared to September, it recorded its second consecutive year-on-year (YOY) sales drop.
Despite the complexities, a look at the portfolio reveals which segments and brands are driving the company’s future growth.
In total, BYD sold 441,706 NEVs in October. This marked a solid 11.47% increase from September, but it was still 12.13% lower than sales from the same period last year.
Passenger NEVs (the bulk of sales) hit 436,856 units, rising 11.14% month-on-month (MOM) but dipping 12.72% YOY.
The BYD brand itself (including the popular Dynasty and Ocean series) mirrored this trend, with a strong 12.22% MOM increase overshadowed by a 17.85% YOY decrease.
Not everything was in decline. Several key areas showed triple-digit growth, pointing to successful diversification and brand strategy:
| Segment/Brand | October Sales | YOY Growth | Key Driver |
| Commercial NEVs | 4,850 units | +127.59% | Massive expansion in buses and trucks. |
| Fang Cheng Bao | 31,052 units | +415.30% | The brand’s new Tai 7 model launch. |
| Yangwang | 654 units | +131.91% | Continued momentum for the luxury division. |
The star of the month was undoubtedly Fang Cheng Bao, which saw its sales absolutely skyrocket. Its explosive growth was primarily fueled by the new Tai 7 model, which launched on September 9th and already accounted for over 20,000 units sold in October.
In contrast, Denza saw a slight dip, with 10,135 units sold, down 5.99% YOY and 18.31% MOM.
While October presented a YOY challenge, the larger picture for the first ten months of the year (January-October) shows sustained growth for the NEV giant:
– Total YTD Sales: BYD moved 3,701,852 units, representing a healthy 13.88% YOY increase.
– Commercial NEVs have exploded this year, with a phenomenal 239.10% increase YOY, selling 46,134 units.
– Fang Cheng Bao also showed its long-term potential, with YTD sales soaring 301.56% to 146,364 units.
