2026 Toyota Hilux Debuts with BEV, Hybrid 48V and Future Hydrogen Power

After more than seven decades on sale and over 27 million units delivered worldwide, the Hilux is entering its most significant transformation yet. The all-new ninth-generation Hilux introduces a fresh design, a completely redesigned cabin, advanced safety technologies and, for the first time, a fully electric variant.

The new model demonstrates Toyota’s official multipath strategy, offering customers a choice of battery-electric, hybrid and conventional combustion powertrains while preserving the toughness, durability and reliability that have defined the Hilux nameplate for generations.

Three Powertrains, One Hilux Philosophy

The 2026 Hilux lineup expands to include multiple electrified options designed to meet different customer needs and infrastructure requirements.

The range includes:

– Hilux BEV, the first Hilux powered entirely by electricity
– Hilux 2.8 Hybrid 48V diesel mild hybrid
– Hilux ICE models powered by a new 2.8-liter diesel engine and a 2.7-liter gasoline engine in selected markets

Toyota has also confirmed a hydrogen fuel-cell Hilux is scheduled to arrive in 2028, giving the pickup one of the broadest powertrain portfolios in the brand’s global lineup.

Tough x Agile Design Brings a New Look

The ninth-generation Hilux adopts a “Tough x Agile” design language that blends rugged capability with a more modern and dynamic appearance.

A new front fascia features slim headlights connected by a central bar carrying the TOYOTA lettering. The grille adopts a wide hexagonal pattern integrated into the bodywork, while redesigned bumpers, wheel arches and alloy wheels create a stronger road presence.

Practical improvements remain central to the Hilux formula. Wider side steps, revised rear access points and improved load-bed accessibility enhance usability for both commercial and recreational customers.

Despite the extensive redesign, overall dimensions remain close to those of the outgoing model, ensuring the same practicality and cargo-carrying versatility buyers expect.

Interior Receives Its Biggest Upgrade Yet

Inside, the 2026 Hilux undergoes a dramatic transformation. Inspired by the latest Land Cruiser, the cabin introduces improved materials, enhanced comfort and a more sophisticated digital experience. Higher trims feature premium synthetic leather finishes, upgraded seat padding and eight-way power-adjustable front seats.

The dashboard is dominated by a new 12.3-inch Toyota Smart Connect infotainment display and a 12.3-inch digital driver cluster. Smartphone integration comes standard through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while higher grades add wireless charging.

Toyota has also focused on functionality, adding larger storage areas, a cooled compartment, redesigned cupholders and a wider center console. Off-road controls are grouped together for easier operation when driving in challenging conditions.

Hilux BEV: The First Fully Electric Hilux

The headline addition to the range is the Hilux BEV. Built on a body-on-frame architecture, the electric pickup preserves the durability and off-road capability that have made the Hilux famous while delivering zero tailpipe emissions.

The powertrain uses front and rear eAxles to create a permanent all-wheel-drive system. Output comes from an 80 kW front motor and a 128 kW rear motor, providing strong traction and immediate torque delivery.

A new 59.2 kWh water-cooled lithium-ion battery is integrated within the vehicle frame and protected by a reinforced subframe specifically engineered for demanding off-road environments.

Range and Charging

The Hilux BEV delivers:

– Up to 257 km (160 miles) WLTP combined range
– Up to 380 km (236 miles) in city driving
– DC fast charging from 10% to 80% in approximately 30 minutes
– AC charging from 10% to 100% in roughly 6.5 hours

Smart charging functionality allows owners to schedule charging sessions and set charging limits to optimize battery life and energy costs.

Genuine Off-Road Capability Remains

Toyota says electrification has not compromised the Hilux’s core capabilities.

The Hilux BEV retains a 700 mm wading depth and offers approach and departure angles comparable to other models in the range. Payload reaches up to 715 kg, while towing capacity stands at 1,600 kg.

The electric model also becomes the first Toyota BEV equipped with Multi-Terrain Select, allowing drivers to optimize vehicle performance for rock, sand, mud, dirt and mogul conditions.

A newly developed de Dion rear axle helps package the electric drivetrain while maintaining ride quality, durability and off-road performance.

Advanced Safety Technology Across the Range

The new Hilux introduces the most comprehensive safety package ever fitted to the model.

Third-generation Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes upgraded driver-assistance technologies such as:

– Lane Tracing Assist
– Enhanced Pre-Collision System
– Emergency Steering Assist
– Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control
– Proactive Driving Assist
– Emergency Driving Stop System

Additional features include Blind Spot Monitor, Safe Exit Assist, Parking Support Brake and a new Rear Seat Reminder System.

Many systems can receive over-the-air software updates, helping keep safety technologies current throughout ownership.

Long-Term Ownership Confidence

Toyota continues to emphasize durability and long-term reliability.

The company’s Battery Care Programme guarantees that the Hilux BEV battery will retain at least 70% of its original capacity for up to 10 years or one million kilometers, subject to annual health checks.

In addition, Toyota Relax warranty coverage can extend protection for up to 10 years or 185,000 km, providing extra peace of mind for both private and commercial users.
