Genesis GV80 Hybrid Debuts New EV-Like Hybrid Powertrain

Genesis has unveiled a new-generation hybrid powertrain designed to deliver the smooth, quiet and responsive driving experience typically associated with an electric vehicle. The new Genesis 2.5 Turbo Hybrid System will make its debut in the upcoming GV80 Hybrid, which is scheduled to launch next month.

The new hybrid system combines stronger performance, improved efficiency and expanded EV operation, marking a significant step in Genesis’ electrification strategy.

The Genesis 2.5 Turbo Hybrid System uses a parallel hybrid configuration featuring two electric motors. A starter-generator motor, known as P1, handles engine starting and power generation, while a second P2 drive motor provides propulsion and regenerative braking.

In the GV80 Hybrid, the system produces a combined 352 PS and 54.0 kgf·m of torque. That represents increases of approximately 16% in power and 26% in torque compared with the conventional GV80 2.5 Turbo.

Genesis says the GV80 Hybrid can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately 7.1 seconds, based on the company’s internal testing standards.

Efficiency also receives a substantial boost. Internal testing of a five-seat, two-wheel-drive GV80 Hybrid with 19-inch wheels showed combined fuel efficiency improving by approximately 25% or more compared with the 2.5 Turbo powertrain.

One of the most notable technologies in the new system is its liquid-cooled hybrid battery. Genesis says it is the first hybrid system within Hyundai Motor Group to feature this type of battery cooling architecture.

Liquid cooling allows the battery temperature to be managed more efficiently than an air-cooled system. This helps increase maximum discharge output and makes it possible to use a greater portion of the battery’s available power.

The result is greater electric motor involvement across a wider range of driving conditions. Genesis says this contributes to quieter operation, smoother acceleration and a driving character that is closer to an EV.

The system is particularly optimized for urban driving, where frequent traffic lights and stop-and-go conditions provide more opportunities to operate in EV Mode.

Genesis has also focused heavily on reducing noise and vibration during startup.

After the vehicle has been parked, the GV80 Hybrid can remain in EV Mode from initial departure until approximately 30 km/h. This is intended to minimize the noise and vibration associated with a cold engine start, particularly in environments such as underground parking garages.

Once the vehicle reaches higher speeds and normal road conditions, the engine can engage when additional power is required.

The hybrid system also uses EV Mode extensively in urban environments, helping maximize electric driving during low-speed and stop-and-go conditions.

Genesis has made several changes to reduce drivetrain noise and improve refinement.

The Final Drive Gear Ratio has been lowered compared with the conventional 2.5 Turbo model to reduce drivetrain noise. The engine also receives a new crankshaft damper pulley designed to reduce torsional and bending vibrations before they reach the cabin.

A Centrifugal Pendulum Absorber is integrated into the new seven-speed rear-wheel-drive transmission. The system counteracts engine rotational vibrations with opposing-phase forces, further improving cabin comfort.

Performance response has also been improved. When the accelerator is pressed firmly while the GV80 Hybrid is operating in EV Mode, the system can simultaneously downshift and engage the engine clutch. This allows the gasoline engine to provide additional power almost immediately.

According to Genesis’ internal testing, acceleration response from 100 km/h is approximately 18% faster than the 2.5-liter gasoline turbo model when the accelerator is pressed. That should prove particularly useful during highway overtaking.

Genesis has redesigned the transmission architecture to make better use of the P2 electric motor.

Instead of relying on a dedicated reverse gear, the P2 motor can rotate in the opposite direction to move the vehicle backward. This eliminates several transmission components and reduces both weight and mechanical friction.

A higher first-gear ratio also helps transfer electric motor torque more effectively to the wheels during reverse operation while improving acceleration from a standstill.

Together, these changes are designed to improve power transmission efficiency while contributing to stronger launch performance.

The new hybrid system also introduces several technologies designed to make everyday driving more efficient and comfortable.

Stay Mode allows the high-voltage battery to power functions such as climate control and the multimedia system while the vehicle is stationary, without requiring the gasoline engine to run.

Hierarchical Predictive Control (HPC) uses information about the planned route and road conditions to manage the battery’s state of charge. The system can select between EV Mode, Hybrid Mode and regenerative braking according to the driving conditions ahead.

The GV80 Hybrid also features Smart Regenerative Braking, which uses navigation information, including speed-camera data, as well as the distance to vehicles ahead to determine the appropriate level of regenerative braking.

By automatically adjusting regeneration, the system can reduce the amount of brake pedal input required from the driver while recovering more energy and potentially improving fuel efficiency.

Alongside the new hybrid technology, Genesis has revealed several design updates for the GV80 Hybrid.

The SUV features a redesigned exterior grille and new wheels intended to give the hybrid model a more premium appearance.

Inside, Genesis is expanding the range of personalization options with four new two-tone interior combinations. These include Obsidian Black with Taiga Green and Ultramarine Blue with Travertine Beige.

Two new real-wood trim choices and additional quilting patterns are also available.

The new GV80 Hybrid represents a broader attempt to bridge the gap between conventional hybrid vehicles and fully electric cars.

Rather than focusing solely on fuel savings, Genesis has engineered the system around electric motor responsiveness, quiet operation, regenerative braking and increased use of EV Mode.

The combination of a 352-PS powertrain, liquid-cooled battery, faster acceleration response and extensive electric operation could make the GV80 Hybrid one of the more sophisticated hybrid luxury SUVs in its segment.

Genesis says the new powertrain is designed to balance efficiency, refinement and performance, with the GV80 Hybrid serving as the first model to introduce the technology.

As Genesis expands its electrified lineup, the new 2.5 Turbo Hybrid System could provide an important bridge for buyers who want an EV-like driving experience without moving completely away from an internal-combustion engine.
