Subaru Teases Powerful New Electric SUV Ahead of 2026 NY Auto Show

Subaru is accelerating its transition to electrification at a surprising pace. After years of lagging behind rivals, the Japanese automaker is quickly building out a growing EV lineup—and its next model could be the most significant yet.

Set to debut at the New York International Auto Show, Subaru’s newest electric SUV has been previewed through a single teaser image and a handful of intriguing details.

A Familiar Yet Evolved EV Design

The teaser image shows a shadowy SUV driving along a coastal road at sunrise or sunset, revealing just enough to spark interest. The new model appears to adopt Subaru’s evolving EV design language, including its signature six-pod daytime running lights—already seen on models like the Subaru Solterra, Subaru Uncharted, and Subaru Trailseeker.

Other visible cues include an illuminated front logo and roof rails, reinforcing the brand’s outdoors-focused identity. The overall silhouette suggests a traditional two-box SUV shape, with little doubt that Subaru is sticking to its rugged roots.

420 HP and Standard All-Wheel Drive

Subaru has confirmed that the new EV will feature standard all-wheel drive, a hallmark of the brand’s lineup. This implies a dual-motor setup, delivering a combined 420 horsepower—making it the most powerful production Subaru ever built.

This performance figure not only puts it ahead of current Subaru offerings but also positions it competitively within the electric SUV segment, where power and capability are key selling points.

Subaru’s First Three-Row EV?

While Subaru has yet to confirm full specifications, hints in the announcement suggest this could be a family-focused vehicle with seating for more than five passengers. That strongly points toward a three-row configuration.

If true, it would fill a major gap in Subaru’s EV strategy. The current electric lineup mirrors much of its combustion range:

– The Uncharted aligns with the Crosstrek
– The Trailseeker parallels the Outback (even marketed as the E-Outback in some regions)
– The Solterra sits close to the Forester

That leaves only the Ascent—the brand’s three-row SUV—without an electric counterpart. This upcoming model could finally complete that puzzle.

Adding weight to this theory, Subaru’s partner Toyota recently introduced a three-row electric SUV of its own, signaling a shared development direction between the two companies.

Full Reveal Just Around the Corner

All questions—including the model’s name, range, and interior details—will be answered during its global debut at the 2026 New York Auto Show.

With strong performance, standard AWD, and the possibility of three-row practicality, Subaru’s next EV could mark a major turning point for the brand in the electric era.
