Nissan is expanding its global pickup lineup with the new Frontier Pro, a China-developed model that will launch in Mexico in October 2026 before reaching additional international markets. The pickup will also be sold as the Navara Pro in Australia and New Zealand starting in 2027, as Nissan looks to strengthen its competitiveness with electrified powertrains and new manufacturing capabilities.
Developed and manufactured by Zhengzhou Nissan, Nissan’s joint venture in China, the Frontier Pro is the first Nissan model designed and produced in China specifically for global export. The launch highlights the growing importance of China as a center for Nissan’s vehicle development, engineering and production.
Following its Mexican debut, the pickup is scheduled to arrive in the Philippines in November 2026, with further launches planned across Latin America, the Middle East and Oceania by the end of the year. Australia and New Zealand will become the first right-hand-drive markets to receive the model in 2027.
Nissan Frontier Pro Combines Plug-In Hybrid Power With Pickup Capability
The new Nissan Frontier Pro will be available with plug-in hybrid (PHEV), gasoline and diesel powertrains, depending on the market. Nissan is tailoring the available configurations to regional customer preferences, with the PHEV version taking priority in Latin America, ASEAN and Oceania.
The Frontier Pro PHEV is Nissan’s first electrified pickup and is designed to combine strong performance with the practicality expected from a midsize truck.
According to the announced specifications, the plug-in hybrid version delivers up to 410 horsepower and 800 Nm of torque. It also offers a claimed pure-electric driving range of 135 km under the NEDC testing cycle and a maximum towing capacity of 3.5 tonnes.
These figures position the PHEV as an option for buyers who want the utility of a traditional pickup while covering shorter trips on electric power. Actual electric range will depend on driving conditions, temperature and other factors, while NEDC figures are not directly comparable with results from newer testing cycles.
The vehicle will also feature Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability, allowing the plug-in hybrid powertrain to supply electricity to compatible external equipment. This could prove useful for outdoor activities, worksites and situations where access to conventional power outlets is limited.
Gasoline and Diesel Versions Target the Middle East
Nissan will also offer internal combustion engine versions of the Frontier Pro to meet demand in markets where conventional powertrains remain important.
The gasoline and diesel models are equipped with the third-generation M9T engine, paired with a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission and BorgWarner’s Mlock intelligent four-wheel-drive system.
The supplied specifications list maximum output of 136 kW, equivalent to approximately 182 horsepower, and peak torque of 500 Nm for these versions.
The Middle East will receive internal combustion engine variants, while the PHEV is intended for markets including Mexico, other Latin American countries, ASEAN and Oceania. The exact powertrain lineup will vary by country.
This approach allows Nissan to introduce a common pickup platform internationally without relying on a single powertrain configuration for every market.
Nissan Frontier Pro Dimensions and Specifications
The Frontier Pro has a substantial footprint, with dimensions designed to accommodate both work-related duties and everyday passenger use.
Its exterior dimensions are:
– Length: 5,520 mm
– Width: 1,960 mm
– Height: 1,950 mm
– Wheelbase: 3,300 mm
Nissan describes the pickup as a vehicle for work, family transportation and daily driving. It combines rugged exterior styling with a spacious five-seat cabin, modern technology and a more refined interior intended to improve comfort on longer journeys.
The combination of a large body, four-wheel-drive availability and substantial towing capacity gives the Frontier Pro the versatility expected from a modern midsize pickup. Its plug-in hybrid configuration adds the potential for reduced fuel consumption on suitable short trips, although overall efficiency will depend on charging frequency and driving conditions.
Nissan Frontier Pro Price and Global Launch Schedule
Mexico will be the first market outside China to receive the new pickup. The Frontier Pro is scheduled to go on sale there in October 2026, with a starting price of 969,900 Mexican pesos, equivalent to approximately $53,400 based on the supplied conversion.
The launch schedule includes several additional markets:
– Mexico: October 2026
– Philippines: November 2026
– Middle East and additional Latin American markets: By the end of 2026
– Australia and New Zealand: 2027, under the Navara Pro name
Pricing for other markets has not yet been specified in the supplied announcements. Local specifications, equipment and powertrain availability may also differ between regions.
China Becomes a Bigger Part of Nissan’s Global Strategy
The Frontier Pro represents a significant step in Nissan’s efforts to use its Chinese development and manufacturing operations to compete more effectively in international markets.
China has become a major center for automotive engineering, electrification and production, with domestic manufacturers such as BYD expanding their presence in overseas markets. By developing vehicles in China for export, Nissan aims to respond more quickly to changing customer preferences while making use of established local capabilities and partnerships.
The pickup is not Nissan’s only example of this strategy. The company has also announced plans to export its N7 electrified sedan from China to markets including ASEAN and Latin America. Earlier in 2026, Nissan introduced the Primera in the Philippines, based on the N7 developed through its Dongfeng Nissan joint venture.
These initiatives point to a broader shift in how Nissan develops and distributes vehicles, with products originating in China increasingly intended for customers beyond the domestic market.
Despite its Chinese origins, Nissan says the Frontier Pro and Navara Pro are manufactured to the company’s global quality and durability standards. The vehicle also draws on Nissan’s long history in the pickup segment, which dates back to the Type 13 truck introduced in 1934. Nissan says it has sold more than 15 million pickups across over 140 markets.
