BYD’s premium Denza brand has officially launched the Denza Z9S, a new mid-to-large-sized electric sedan positioned below the larger Denza Z9. With up to 1,194 horsepower, three electric motors, and a claimed CLTC range of 1,100 km (684 miles), the Z9S combines high performance with long-distance capability and luxury-car technology.
The new electric sedan is available in three configurations in China, with prices ranging from 255,800 yuan ($37,600) to 325,800 yuan ($47,900). That represents a significant reduction from the model’s pre-sale pricing, with the final prices roughly $8,000 lower.
The Denza Z9S also enters an increasingly competitive price range. Its Chinese-market pricing overlaps with the Tesla Model 3, which currently starts at 235,500 yuan and reaches 339,500 yuan in China. However, the Z9S is positioned as a larger, more powerful and more premium vehicle.
Denza Z9S Brings a Sportier Design
The Denza Z9S features a sporty exterior with a sculpted hood, a prominent front air intake and a new split-headlight design. A roof-mounted LiDAR sensor highlights the sedan’s advanced driver-assistance capabilities.
Measuring 5,090 mm (200.4 inches) long, 1,980 mm (78.0 inches) wide and 1,490 mm (58.7 inches) tall, the Z9S has a 3,025-mm (119.1-inch) wheelbase. Buyers can choose from seven exterior colors and 19- or 20-inch wheels.
At the rear, slim taillights and an active electric spoiler give the sedan a performance-oriented appearance. The Z9S also offers a 120-liter front trunk, adding useful storage space to the conventional rear cargo area.
Luxury Interior With Three Large Displays
Inside, the Denza Z9S takes a distinctly premium approach. The cabin features a wraparound dashboard with a 17.3-inch floating central touchscreen, a 13.2-inch digital instrument display and a massive 50-inch head-up display.
Luxury materials include Nappa leather seats, a suede headliner and metallic trim. A magnetic panel on the passenger side of the cabin can accommodate accessories such as tablets and storage cases.
Rear passengers also receive a dedicated 7-inch control screen integrated into the armrest. It can be used to adjust climate settings, entertainment functions and seating.
The Z9S is also equipped with BYD’s God’s Eye 5.0 advanced driver-assistance system. The system supports assisted navigation on both city streets and highways, along with safety functions including Automatic Emergency Braking and Emergency Steering Assist.
Up to 1,194 HP From Three Electric Motors
The Denza Z9S is offered with both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive powertrains.
The entry-level single-motor version produces 370 kW (496 hp) and sends power to the rear wheels. Higher versions use a tri-motor setup that delivers a remarkable 890 kW (1,194 hp) of combined output.
The high-performance version can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.68 seconds, putting the Z9S firmly into high-performance EV territory.
Power comes from BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery with a capacity of 102.326 kWh. Depending on the configuration, the sedan offers claimed CLTC ranges of 780 km, 920 km and 1,100 km.
The longest-range version’s 1,100-km CLTC rating corresponds to approximately 891 km (554 miles) under WLTP according to the provided specifications, although real-world driving range will vary depending on speed, temperature, road conditions and driving style.
Advanced Chassis and BYD e3 Technology
The Z9S uses a steel-aluminum hybrid body structure, with high-strength steel and aluminum accounting for 91.1% of the structure. BYD quotes torsional rigidity of 45,036 N•m/degree, while the battery is integrated into the vehicle using the company’s CTB, or Cell-to-Body, technology.
One of the most interesting aspects of the Z9S is its e3 technology platform, which gives the sedan capabilities beyond conventional all-wheel-drive systems.
Standard rear-wheel steering helps reduce the turning radius, with the top version achieving a minimum turning radius of 4.75 meters. The system also supports unusual driving functions such as Crab Walk and Compass Turn, which can improve maneuverability in tight spaces.
The Z9S additionally features BYD’s DiSus-A intelligent air suspension system, designed to provide electronic control over the vehicle’s body movements and improve ride comfort and handling.
Denza Z9S vs. Tesla Model 3
The Denza Z9S is particularly notable because its Chinese-market pricing puts it close to the Tesla Model 3. However, the two sedans target somewhat different segments.
The Z9S is considerably larger than the Model 3 and offers a more premium interior, a much larger battery and substantially more power in its tri-motor configuration. Its 1,194-hp output and advanced chassis technology put it closer to high-performance luxury EVs than mainstream electric sedans.
The Tesla Model 3, meanwhile, remains a more compact electric sedan with a broader global presence. The price overlap in China nevertheless illustrates how quickly Chinese EV manufacturers are adding luxury-level technology and performance to vehicles approaching mainstream EV pricing.
