Volkswagen is preparing to expand its electric SUV lineup with the new ID. Tiguan, an all-electric model set to arrive in markets in early 2027. The new EV will succeed the ID.4 and ID.5 while continuing to be sold alongside the combustion-engine and hybrid versions of the Tiguan.
The Volkswagen ID. Tiguan will make its world premiere in early October. Until then, Volkswagen is continuing development and road testing with prototype vehicles still covered in camouflage.
The new model is part of Volkswagen’s evolving strategy of bringing familiar nameplates into its electric vehicle range. Following the introduction of the ID. Polo and ID. Cross, the ID. Tiguan will use an established name intended to give customers a clearer connection between Volkswagen’s combustion, hybrid and electric models.
The Tiguan name carries significant weight for Volkswagen. More than 8.3 million Tiguan vehicles have been produced, making it one of the company’s most important global nameplates.
Volkswagen Brand CEO Thomas Schäfer said the ID. Tiguan is designed to carry the qualities associated with the existing model into the electric era. The company describes the upcoming EV as offering premium design, generous interior space, intuitive operation and new technologies.
The electric Tiguan will therefore not replace the conventional Tiguan entirely. Instead, Volkswagen plans to offer both models, giving customers a choice between different powertrain technologies.
This approach is becoming increasingly important as automakers continue to transition toward electric vehicles while maintaining gasoline, diesel and plug-in hybrid options in key markets.
The ID. Tiguan will take over the role currently occupied by the Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.5, two of the brand’s most successful battery-electric models.
Since their launch in 2021, the ID.4 and ID.5 have achieved combined deliveries of more than 950,000 vehicles worldwide. That makes the two models one of Volkswagen AG’s most successful battery-electric model series.
Volkswagen is now looking to build on that momentum with a new electric SUV carrying one of its best-known product names.
The move also highlights the continued importance of SUVs to Volkswagen. The Tiguan is currently the best-selling model worldwide for both the Volkswagen brand and the Volkswagen Group. Together, the Tiguan and its sister model, the Tayron, recorded more than one million deliveries over the past year.
Both are currently available with petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains.
Volkswagen has not yet revealed full technical specifications for the ID. Tiguan, including its battery capacity, driving range, charging performance and pricing. More details are expected when the electric SUV makes its official debut in early October.
The ID. Tiguan will be an important addition to Volkswagen’s growing EV portfolio and could become one of the brand’s key electric SUVs as the company expands its next generation of ID models.
With the familiar Tiguan name, Volkswagen is clearly aiming to make the transition to electric power easier for customers already familiar with the brand’s popular SUV.
More details, including the production version’s specifications and market availability, are expected at the upcoming world premiere.
