Hyundai and Genesis Will Launch Long-Range EREVs in 2027

Hyundai is expanding its electrification strategy beyond traditional hybrids and battery-electric vehicles with a new range-extender electric vehicle (EREV) program. The first model will be the Hyundai Santa Fe EREV, arriving in North America in the first half of 2027 with a claimed driving range of more than 600 miles (965 km).

The Santa Fe EREV will combine electric motors and a relatively small battery with a gasoline engine that can generate electricity when needed. Hyundai says the approach will deliver an EV-like driving experience while addressing one of the biggest challenges facing larger electric SUVs: long-distance travel in regions where charging infrastructure remains limited.

The new EREV program is part of a much broader Hyundai strategy that calls for more than 100 new or significantly revised vehicles worldwide by 2030, alongside a major expansion of electrified models.

Hyundai Santa Fe EREV Targets More Than 600 Miles of Range

The Santa Fe EREV will begin production at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama in the United States in early 2027. It will be assembled alongside conventional versions of the midsize SUV.

Hyundai says the EREV will offer more than 600 miles of total driving range, or approximately 965 kilometers. That is around 1.6 times the range Hyundai associates with a conventionally powered Santa Fe.

Unlike a conventional hybrid, an EREV is primarily driven by electric motors. The gasoline engine is expected to operate mainly as a generator, producing electricity to recharge the battery rather than mechanically driving the wheels.

This setup could provide many of the advantages of an EV without requiring a large battery pack.

Hyundai says the Santa Fe EREV will use a battery with less than half the capacity of a comparable fully electric vehicle, helping reduce weight and battery costs while still providing strong electric performance.

Hyundai has confirmed that the Santa Fe EREV will use two electric motors. While the company has not provided a complete technical specification, the configuration strongly suggests an all-wheel-drive system with one motor powering each axle.

The automaker says the dual-motor setup will deliver an “EV-like driving experience and acceleration.”

That could make the Santa Fe EREV particularly interesting for buyers who want the instant response of an electric powertrain but are not ready to rely entirely on public charging infrastructure.

The fifth-generation Santa Fe has been on the market for several years, meaning the EREV could also arrive alongside a broader mid-cycle update to the SUV.

Hyundai Is Developing Its Own EREV Battery Technology

The Santa Fe EREV will use Hyundai-developed battery technology designed specifically for the new powertrain.

According to Hyundai, its new high-performance cells can deliver more than twice the output of the high-nickel cells previously used by the company while reducing charging time by approximately 40 percent.

The smaller battery is a key part of the EREV concept. Rather than carrying the large battery required for a 500- or 600-mile battery-electric vehicle, the Santa Fe can use a smaller pack while relying on its gasoline-powered generator for extended journeys.

Hyundai believes this combination can deliver comparable electric driving characteristics with significantly less battery capacity.

EREV Technology Will Expand Beyond the Santa Fe

The Santa Fe will not be Hyundai’s only range-extender vehicle.

The company plans to introduce EREV technology across multiple vehicle segments and markets. An EREV version of the recently launched Ioniq V is planned for China, while another compact crossover using the technology is also expected.

Hyundai says its first EREV models will launch during the first half of 2027, marking a significant expansion of its electrified powertrain lineup.

The company is effectively positioning EREVs between conventional hybrids and full battery-electric vehicles. They can provide substantial electric driving capability while retaining the long-distance flexibility associated with gasoline-powered vehicles.

Genesis Will Also Get a Long-Range EREV

Hyundai’s luxury brand Genesis is preparing its own range-extender electric vehicle.

The upcoming Genesis EREV is expected to enter production in early 2027 and appears to be closely related to the Genesis GV80. It will use an all-new high-performance battery and target an even greater total range than the Santa Fe EREV.

Genesis is targeting more than 640 miles (1,030 km) of combined driving range from the EREV SUV.

The model will join Genesis’ expanding electrified lineup, which already includes vehicles such as the GV60, Electrified GV70 and Electrified G80. Genesis is also preparing the full-size GV90 electric SUV and its first conventional hybrid, the GV80 Hybrid.

Hyundai Is Broadening Its Electrification Strategy

The EREV push represents a notable change in Hyundai’s electrification strategy.

Rather than focusing exclusively on battery-electric vehicles, Hyundai now expects electrified models—including full hybrids—to account for 60 percent of passenger vehicle sales by 2030, compared with 23 percent in 2025.

The company has not provided a new global battery-electric sales target in its latest roadmap. Its previous target, announced in 2024, called for two million annual EV sales by 2030.

The revised strategy instead emphasizes a broader mix of battery-electric vehicles, hybrids and range-extender models.

Hyundai plans to launch or revise more than 100 vehicle models globally by 2030. North America and Korea will receive the largest number of new or updated vehicles, followed by Europe, India and China.

Europe Remains a Major EV Focus

While North America will receive a strong mix of hybrids and EREVs, Hyundai is taking a more aggressive battery-electric approach in Europe.

The company aims to cover 85 percent of the European market with a fully electrified portfolio by 2030.

Five new electric SUVs and light commercial vehicles are planned for the region, in addition to the upcoming Ioniq 3 and a new B-segment electric SUV.

Hyundai is targeting more than 420,000 battery-electric vehicle sales in Europe by 2030, compared with 116,000 in 2025.

The company is therefore pursuing different electrification strategies depending on the market. Europe is receiving a stronger focus on battery-electric vehicles, while North America is expected to see a larger role for hybrids and range-extender vehicles.

Lower-Cost Batteries Are Also Coming

Hyundai is also working to reduce the cost of its future battery-electric vehicles.

The company plans to use medium-nickel NCM battery cells that it expects could reduce battery costs by approximately 30 percent compared with existing technology.

A cloud-based battery management system is also being developed to help extend battery life. Hyundai expects the technology to increase average battery life by around 20 percent by 2028.

Battery safety is another focus, with a new Thermal Runaway Protection system scheduled to debut in the Genesis GV90.

Hyundai’s EV Strategy Is Getting More Flexible

Hyundai’s 2030 roadmap shows that the company is no longer betting on a single electrification technology.

Battery-electric vehicles will remain a major part of the strategy, particularly in Europe, but hybrids and EREVs will play an increasingly important role in markets where charging infrastructure, vehicle size and consumer preferences make a full EV transition more difficult.

The 2027 Hyundai Santa Fe EREV will be the first major test of that strategy. With more than 600 miles of claimed range, two electric motors and a battery significantly smaller than that of a comparable full EV, it could offer a compelling alternative for SUV buyers who want electric driving without the range limitations associated with a conventional battery-electric vehicle.

If Hyundai can deliver the promised combination of long range, electric performance, lower battery requirements and competitive pricing, the Santa Fe EREV could help make range-extender technology a much more important part of the next generation of electrified vehicles.
