General Motors is making public charging more convenient for its electric vehicle owners by integrating the ChargePoint network into its recently launched Energy Pass platform.
The latest update allows Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac EV drivers to locate, activate, and pay for charging sessions directly from their vehicle brand’s mobile app, eliminating the need for multiple charging accounts.
Energy Pass, which recently debuted in the myChevrolet, myGMC, and myCadillac mobile apps, serves as a single platform for public charging. With the addition of ChargePoint, GM EV owners can now access thousands of additional charging stations without downloading another app or creating a separate account.
According to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center, ChargePoint operates nearly 80,000 public charging ports across the United States, including approximately 75,000 Level 2 chargers and more than 4,400 DC fast chargers.
The integration immediately expands the charging options available to GM customers while creating a more seamless charging experience.
Plug & Charge Makes Charging Even Easier
Many ChargePoint stations available through Energy Pass also support Plug & Charge technology. Compatible GM electric vehicles can automatically authenticate with the charging station as soon as the connector is plugged in, allowing payment to be processed without requiring drivers to open an app or use a credit card.
By reducing the number of steps required at the charger, Plug & Charge helps make public charging faster and more convenient, particularly during road trips.
Access to Most U.S. Fast Chargers
GM expects Energy Pass to become an increasingly comprehensive charging solution as additional charging networks are integrated.
Based on current network expansion plans, the company anticipates that Energy Pass will eventually provide access to approximately 70% of all DC fast chargers in the United States. The ChargePoint partnership alone also gives drivers access to roughly 60% of the country’s public Level 2 charging stations, making the platform substantially more useful for both daily charging and long-distance travel.
Instead of managing multiple charging memberships, GM customers can increasingly rely on a single application for finding, starting, and paying for charging sessions.
GM and ChargePoint Continue Expanding Public Charging
Beyond software integration, GM and ChargePoint have spent more than a year working together to expand fast-charging infrastructure in underserved areas across the United States. The partnership focuses on reducing “charging deserts” by bringing reliable DC fast charging to locations where it was previously limited or unavailable.
Several recently completed projects highlight that effort:
– Elmwood Township, Michigan: Four new DC fast-charging stalls now serve visitors traveling to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park, bringing fast charging to a county that previously had none.
– Redding, California: Sixteen charging stalls supporting both NACS and CCS connectors have been installed near the Sacramento River and the city’s popular Sundial Bridge.
– Winter Park, Florida: Seven new dual-standard charging stalls improve charging access for drivers visiting the Orlando area and its major attractions.
– Upstate New York: Additional fast-charging locations now help connect popular destinations including Lake Placid, Niagara Falls, the Finger Lakes, and Cooperstown via major state highways.
Many of these sites feature ChargePoint’s Omni port technology, allowing both NACS and CCS-equipped electric vehicles to charge from the same station, improving compatibility as the industry continues transitioning toward the North American Charging Standard.
A Simpler Charging Experience for GM EV Owners
The ChargePoint integration significantly strengthens the value of GM’s Energy Pass platform. By bringing one of the nation’s largest charging networks into a unified experience, drivers can spend less time managing multiple apps and more time on the road.
Combined with continued investments in new charging infrastructure, the partnership between GM and ChargePoint aims to improve charging accessibility, reduce range anxiety, and support the growing adoption of electric vehicles across the United States.
