Renault 4 E-Tech Plein Sud Arrives in the UK with Unique Open-Air Electric Roof

The Renault 4 E-Tech electric lineup expands with a distinctive new variant—the ‘Plein Sud’. Now available to order in the UK, this version introduces a full-length electrically opening canvas roof, starting from £27,445 on the road after the government’s Electric Car Grant.

Blending retro inspiration with modern EV practicality, the Plein Sud builds on the success of Renault’s reinvented classic while adding something rare in today’s market: a true open-air driving experience in a compact electric car.

A Segment-First Electric Canvas Roof

The standout feature is the ‘Plein Sud’ canvas roof, a contemporary take on a hallmark design element from the original Renault 4. Unlike panoramic glass roofs, this system fully retracts, creating an 80x92cm opening that floods the cabin with light and fresh air.

Operated via a one-touch button or voice commands through Renault’s digital assistant, the roof folds neatly into three sections and can be adjusted to multiple positions. It’s a genuinely unique offering—currently the only EV in its segment with a fully opening roof.

Despite the added functionality, refinement remains intact. The multi-layer construction ensures strong insulation and minimal noise intrusion when closed, with little compromise to headroom.

Everyday Practicality Remains Intact

Crucially, the Plein Sud doesn’t sacrifice usability. Boot capacity stays unchanged at up to 1,350 litres with the rear seats folded, maintaining the versatility that has defined the Renault 4 E-Tech.

A low loading height and wide-opening tailgate improve accessibility, while up to 181mm of ground clearance ensures the car retains its go-anywhere character. Suspension tuning prioritises comfort, making it suitable for both urban and longer journeys.

Inside, the OpenR Link infotainment system features a 10-inch touchscreen with Google built-in, including navigation with charging optimisation. A 10.3-inch digital driver display completes the modern, connected cabin.

Proven Electric Performance

Under the skin, the Plein Sud sticks with the same efficient setup as the standard model. A 52kWh battery paired with a 150hp motor delivers up to 242 miles (WLTP) of range, depending on specification.

Charging is competitive for the class, with DC rapid charging up to 100kW enabling a 15–80% top-up in around 30 minutes. One-pedal driving comes as standard, improving efficiency and ease of use, especially in city traffic.

Enhanced Safety and Driver Assistance

The introduction of the Plein Sud also brings compliance with the latest GSR2.3 safety standards. Up to 28 advanced driver assistance systems are available, reinforcing the model’s safety credentials.

New features include a driver monitoring system that detects fatigue using a camera, and emergency stop assist, which can bring the car to a halt if the driver becomes unresponsive. A predictive eco-driving assistant also uses navigation data to help maximise efficiency by anticipating road conditions ahead.

More Personalisation Options

Renault has expanded customisation across the range, offering six body colours including the heritage-inspired Hauts-de-France Green. Buyers can also choose contrasting design elements such as a black bonnet or exterior graphics.

All versions come with 18-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels as standard, reinforcing the car’s modern yet characterful design.

Pricing and Availability in the UK

The Plein Sud version is available exclusively in techno+ and iconic+ trims, priced £1,500 above equivalent fixed-roof models. Thanks to eligibility for the full £3,750 Electric Car Grant, pricing remains competitive.

– techno+ Plein Sud: £27,445 OTR
– iconic+ Plein Sud: £29,445 OTR

Order books are now open, with first UK deliveries expected in Q3 2026.

A Fresh Take on Everyday Electric Motoring

The Renault 4 E-Tech Plein Sud adds genuine differentiation in an increasingly crowded EV market. By combining open-air driving with everyday practicality, it offers something few electric cars currently can—character, versatility, and a sense of fun without compromising usability.
