CATL, Ampace and Octopus Energy Join Forces to Develop Smarter Home Batteries for Europe

CATL, Ampace and Octopus Energy have signed a strategic memorandum of understanding (MoU) to explore next-generation home energy storage solutions for European households. The partnership aims to combine advanced battery technology with intelligent energy management software, potentially making residential batteries more affordable, efficient and capable of reducing electricity bills.

The collaboration brings together three companies with complementary expertise. CATL will provide battery technology and supply chain support, Ampace will focus on battery cell and energy storage system development and manufacturing, while Octopus Energy will contribute its digital platform, smart electricity tariffs and Virtual Power Plant (VPP) capabilities.

The initial focus will be on European markets where Octopus Energy operates, with the UK, France and Spain among the priority countries.

The partnership aims to move home energy storage beyond conventional battery systems that simply store electricity for later use. Instead, the companies want to develop connected energy solutions that automatically respond to electricity prices, renewable energy availability and grid demand.

CATL and Ampace will contribute their research into next-generation battery technologies, including sodium-ion batteries, high-density cell designs and long-life battery systems.

These developments could help improve battery safety, extend service life and reduce the cost of residential energy storage. However, the companies have not yet announced specific battery models, capacities, prices or commercial launch dates.

Ampace will take responsibility for researching, developing and manufacturing battery cells, battery management systems (BMS) and complete energy storage systems. CATL will provide technological expertise and supply chain support.

Octopus Energy will connect the hardware to its smart energy ecosystem, using its dynamic electricity tariffs and energy management software to optimize how household batteries operate.

One of the main objectives of the collaboration is to make home batteries work more intelligently.

Instead of charging whenever electricity is available, connected systems could automatically identify the cheapest periods to store energy. They could also prioritize electricity generated by rooftop solar panels when conditions allow.

During periods of high electricity demand, stored energy could be used inside the home or exported back to the grid, depending on the household’s energy setup and applicable market arrangements.

This approach could provide several advantages:

– Lower electricity bills: Batteries can charge when electricity prices are low and supply power when prices increase.
– Better use of solar energy: Households with rooftop solar installations could store excess generation instead of immediately exporting it to the grid.
– Grid flexibility: Connected batteries could help balance electricity supply and demand during peak periods.
– Greater energy independence: Households could rely less on electricity purchased during expensive periods.
– Improved renewable energy integration: Smart charging and storage could help make better use of electricity generated from renewable sources.

A key part of the strategy is Octopus Energy’s Virtual Power Plant technology. By connecting multiple residential batteries into a coordinated network, the company can potentially manage distributed energy resources as a larger, flexible power asset.

This could allow individual households to benefit from energy markets while helping improve the stability and resilience of Europe’s electricity grids.

The three companies are also exploring opportunities to connect home energy storage with other technologies, including rooftop solar, smart EV charging and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) systems.

Vehicle-to-grid technology allows compatible electric vehicles to send electricity back to a home or the wider power grid. Combined with residential batteries and intelligent energy management, it could create a more integrated household energy ecosystem.

For example, a home could use solar panels to generate electricity during the day, store excess power in a stationary battery and charge an electric vehicle when electricity prices are lowest.

In the future, the same system could coordinate electricity flows between the home, the vehicle and the grid.
