Nissan Repurposes LEAF Batteries for Ultra-Fast EV Charging at Port of Vigo

Nissan Motor Corporation is advancing its circular economy strategy by supporting the launch of an ultra-fast EV charging solution powered by repurposed electric vehicle batteries at the Port of Vigo.

The innovative system, called Green Charge Flex, was developed by Spanish energy storage and EV charging specialist Little Electric Energy. It gives a second life to batteries from the Nissan LEAF, transforming them into a modular energy storage system designed to boost EV charging infrastructure.

Green Charge Flex repurposes 12 Nissan LEAF 30kWh battery packs, combining them into a 300kWh Energy Storage System (ESS). The stored energy helps support multiple charging points at the port, including up to 240kW ultra-fast DC charging and 22kW AC charging.

By adding battery storage, the system effectively increases available grid capacity, allowing high-power EV charging even in locations where the local grid is limited.

According to Soufiane El Khomri, Energy Director for Nissan in the AMIEO region, the project highlights the potential of giving EV batteries a second life after their automotive use.

He explained that integrating repurposed batteries into modular storage systems helps unlock ultra-fast charging at ports, industrial areas and other sites where grid capacity is constrained, while also easing pressure on local electricity networks.

Pilot Project to Demonstrate Circular Energy Solutions

The installation at the Port of Vigo will run as a pilot project for at least one year, in collaboration with local charging point operators and port authorities.

The system also supports multiple fast-charging standards, including CCS-1, CCS-2 and CHAdeMO.

The project is co-funded by the European Union and Spain’s national energy agency, the Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy (IDAE), highlighting the growing role of second-life batteries in Europe’s energy transition.

Extending the Life of EV Batteries

Ruben Blanco, CEO of Little Electric Energy, said the partnership builds on Nissan’s long-standing leadership in electric mobility. By repurposing used EV batteries, the Green Charge Flex system demonstrates how energy storage can deliver fast, sustainable and commercially viable charging solutions wherever they are needed.

The initiative is part of Nissan’s broader strategy to refabricate, reuse, repurpose and recycle EV batteries, maximizing their value long after their first life on the road.
