BYD’s January Sales Signal Continued EV Dominance

BYD kicked off 2025 with impressive plug-in vehicle sales, demonstrating continued growth in a competitive market. The Chinese automotive giant sold 300,538 plug-in vehicles in January, a substantial 47.5% increase compared to the same month last year.

While January’s figures are lower than the record-breaking sales of over 500,000 units seen in September, November, and December of 2024, they still represent a strong start to the year.

A key trend highlighted by the January sales data is the rising popularity of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). BYD sold 171,069 PHEVs, a remarkable 78.7% jump from January 2024. This surge in PHEV sales meant they comprised a significant 57.7% of BYD’s total sales, a 10.1 percentage point increase year-over-year. Conversely, battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales, while still growing at 19.1% year-over-year, represented a smaller portion of overall sales at 42.3%, down 9.9 percentage points from last year. In total, BYD sold 125,377 BEVs in January.

Of the total sales, 296,446 units were passenger vehicles, with the remaining 4,092 comprised of commercial vehicles and buses. BYD also reported a 49.1% increase in vehicle production compared to last year, reaching 327,864 units in January, and installed 15.511 GWh of battery capacity into its EVs.

A particularly noteworthy achievement for BYD is the significant growth in exports. January saw exports soar to 66,336 units, an impressive 83.3% increase year-over-year and a new monthly record for the company.

In January 2025, BYD achieved total monthly sales of 300,538 new energy vehicles—a testament to progress, innovation, and the road ahead.

The sales figures encompass all of BYD’s brands, including Denza, Fang Cheng Bao, and Yangwang, in addition to BYD-badged vehicles. Yangwang, the premium brand, sold 286 units, while Fang Cheng Bao and Denza sold 6,219 and 11,720 units respectively. The strongest performance among specific models came from BYD-badged vehicles (Dynasty and Ocean series), with 278,221 units sold, a 50.3% increase from last year. Cumulatively, BYD has now sold an astounding 10.9 million plug-in vehicles.

It’s important to note that the lower January sales figures compared to late 2024 are likely influenced by the Chinese New Year holiday, which began on January 27th and extends to February 4th, significantly impacting sales during the last week of January. Many businesses are expected to resume normal operations around February 10th.

Beyond domestic growth, BYD is actively expanding its global footprint. The company’s EV plant in Thailand, with an annual capacity of 150,000 units, was completed in July of last year. Furthermore, BYD plans to complete another large-scale plant in Indonesia by the end of 2025, also with a capacity of 150,000 units, highlighting the company’s commitment to international expansion.
