GM Recalls 67,380 Cadillac and Chevy EVs Over Software Glitch That Could Cause Brake Failure

General Motors (GM) is recalling 67,380 electric vehicles from its Cadillac and Chevrolet brands over a software defect that could temporarily interfere with braking, increasing the risk of a crash.

The recall affects certain Cadillac Lyriq, Celestiq, and Vistiq models, along with the Chevrolet Blazer EV. According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the problem involves the brake system control module (BSCM), which may incorrectly interpret wheel movement under specific driving conditions.

The issue can cause a temporary loss of braking while driving, potentially preventing the vehicle from slowing down as expected.

GM’s recall covers 67,380 electric vehicles equipped with performance all-wheel drive (pAWD). The affected model years include:

– 2023–2027 Cadillac Lyriq
– 2025–2026 Cadillac Celestiq
– 2026–2027 Cadillac Vistiq
– 2024–2027 Chevrolet Blazer EV

Only certain performance all-wheel-drive versions are affected. Not every vehicle from these model years is necessarily included in the recall.

The defect originates in the software controlling the vehicle’s braking system.

Under certain conditions, the brake system control module can miscalculate wheel movement because of an error in its slip calculation. This can happen when a driver lightly applies the brakes while making a sharp turn and the vehicle encounters a bump or uneven road surface.

The software may incorrectly interpret how quickly the wheels are rotating, potentially resulting in a temporary loss of braking.

In practical terms, drivers may experience a situation in which pressing the brake pedal does not slow the vehicle as expected. The problem could increase the risk of an accident, particularly when navigating curves or uneven roads.

The recall investigation followed a low-speed incident involving a 2024 Cadillac Lyriq that struck a garage.

On April 10, 2026, a GM technical expert submitted a report to the automaker’s Speak Up for Safety (SUFS) program, triggering further investigation.

GM subsequently conducted internal testing and successfully reproduced the software problem. The investigation also identified similarities to a separate braking-related recall issued in 2024.

According to NHTSA filings, GM received 24 field complaints related to the issue between February 24, 2024, and June 11, 2026.

Of those complaints, 20 involved minor accidents, while two included reports of minor injuries.

GM has since introduced software corrections in vehicle production over the past several months. The automaker says the updated software addresses the identified braking problems.

GM will correct the issue by updating the brake system control module software at no cost to affected owners.

The repair can be completed through an over-the-air (OTA) software update, allowing eligible vehicles to receive the correction wirelessly without visiting a dealership. Owners who cannot receive the update remotely can have the software installed by an authorized dealer.

The updated software is also intended to address the earlier anti-lock braking system (ABS) issue affecting certain Cadillac Lyriq models.

This is not the first time GM has faced braking-related problems with the Cadillac Lyriq.

In 2024, the automaker recalled certain Lyriq models after discovering that the anti-lock braking system could unexpectedly release brake pressure. The issue could interfere with normal braking and make it more difficult for drivers to slow down or stop.

Although the earlier ABS problem and the newly identified software defect are separate issues, GM says its current software correction addresses both.

GM expects to mail recall notification letters to affected vehicle owners on December 14, 2026.

Owners do not need to pay for the repair, whether the software update is performed remotely or at a dealership.

The recall identification numbers are:

– GM recall number: N262570900
– NHTSA campaign number: 26V717

Owners can check whether their vehicle is affected by entering its 17-digit VIN on the official NHTSA recall website.

For additional information, Cadillac owners can contact customer service at 1-800-333-4223, while Chevrolet owners can call 1-800-222-1020.

The NHTSA vehicle safety hotline is also available at 1-888-327-4236.
