Suzuki will introduce a plug-in hybrid version of its bestselling Swift hatchback in 2013, according to a Nikkei report.
The Suzuki Swift PHEV is likely to cost 500,000 yen (US$6,250) higher than the standard gasoline Swift, but its pricing will not exceed 2 million yen ($24,900), the Nikkei has reported.
The Swift PHEV will use its Li-ion battery pack, provided by Sanyo, to deliver a 19-mile (30km) all-electric range on a full charge. It will also use a small gasoline engine to generate electricity.
Suzuki Swift Plug-in Hybrid was shown at the Tokyo Motor Show in October 2009 as a concept. The concept Swift PHEV features a series hybrid system that incorporates a small 600cc internal combustion engine, mated to an electric motor. The engine generates 54-horsepower while the electric motor produces 74-horsepower.
The Suzuki Swift is currently available with a 1.2 – 1.6-liter range of gasoline engines and a turbo-diesel alternative for European markets.
