Mercedes-AMG is preparing to expand its dedicated electric performance lineup with a new high-performance SUV, and the first official teaser images provide an early look at what could become one of the brand’s most important EVs.
Shown beneath a dark covering in images released by Mercedes-AMG, the upcoming electric SUV clearly shares design cues with the new AMG GT 4-Door electric model. Its muscular proportions, pronounced wheel arches and distinctive lighting signatures suggest that this will be far more than an electrified version of an existing Mercedes-Benz SUV.
Mercedes-AMG has yet to reveal the SUV’s name, power figures, battery specifications or exact launch date. However, the teaser confirms that the model is being developed as part of AMG’s new dedicated electric strategy.
Mercedes-AMG Electric SUV Gets GT-Inspired Styling
Although much of the vehicle remains hidden, the teaser images reveal several important design details.
The front end features distinctive LED daytime running lights that appear closely related to those used on the new AMG GT 4-Door. The lighting signature incorporates Mercedes’ three-pointed-star theme, giving the SUV a recognizable connection to AMG’s latest electric models.
The body itself looks particularly aggressive. A sculpted hood, wide fenders and large wheel arches give the vehicle a planted stance, while the roofline appears considerably sportier than that of a conventional luxury SUV.
Rather than simply adapting the design of the GLC or GLE, Mercedes-AMG appears to be developing the SUV as a high-riding counterpart to its new electric GT models.
At the rear, the connection becomes even clearer. The teaser shows circular taillight elements containing a small three-pointed-star lighting signature. The design echoes the rear lighting treatment of the AMG GT 4-Door EV, although the SUV appears to use a simpler arrangement.
The final production design remains hidden, but earlier camouflaged prototypes have already suggested a low-slung, performance-focused SUV with coupe-like proportions.
A New Flagship for AMG.EA
The upcoming SUV is expected to use Mercedes-AMG’s dedicated AMG.EA electric architecture rather than an existing combustion-based platform adapted for electric power.
That distinction is important for AMG’s transition to EVs. The company is moving toward dedicated electric architectures designed around high performance, high-voltage charging and large battery packs instead of simply converting existing gasoline-powered models.
The new electric GT 4-Door is the clearest example of this strategy. Mercedes-AMG has already confirmed an 800-volt electrical system and a 106-kWh battery for the model, with the range expected to reach around 300 miles depending on configuration.
The upcoming SUV is likely to share elements of this technology, although Mercedes-AMG has not confirmed its battery capacity, charging performance or range.
The strategy also follows the direction established by AMG’s Concept GT XX, which demonstrated the technology and design language Mercedes-AMG intends to bring to its next generation of high-performance EVs.
Could the AMG Electric SUV Make More Than 1,000 HP?
Mercedes-AMG has not announced power figures for the SUV, so any performance numbers remain speculative.
However, the new AMG GT 4-Door electric model provides an indication of what could be possible.
The range-topping GT 63 4-Door EV is expected to produce up to 1,153 horsepower, while the GT 55 version is rated at approximately 805 hp. Mercedes-AMG has also revealed a dual-motor configuration producing around 536 hp.
If the SUV adopts similar hardware, a four-figure horsepower output would not be surprising for a future range-topping version.
The SUV’s larger body and additional ride height could also allow AMG to pursue a different balance between outright acceleration, high-speed performance and everyday usability.
Still, Mercedes-AMG will need to confirm whether the SUV receives the same motor configurations as the GT 4-Door or uses a modified powertrain specifically developed for the heavier SUV.
When Will the Mercedes-AMG Electric SUV Arrive?
Mercedes-AMG first announced plans for a dedicated electric SUV in 2024, and subsequent prototypes have provided additional evidence that development is well underway.
The latest official teaser suggests that the vehicle is now approaching its public debut.
Mercedes-AMG has not yet confirmed a production date, but the SUV is expected to be revealed before the end of 2026, with sales potentially following in 2027.
The new model will join an expanding family of AMG electric vehicles that includes the upcoming GT 4-Door EV and future dedicated AMG models.
It will also give Mercedes-AMG an important rival to other high-performance electric SUVs from brands such as Porsche, BMW and Lucid.
A Different Kind of Electric AMG
The new SUV represents an important step for Mercedes-AMG as the performance division moves beyond combustion engines.
Rather than simply electrifying an existing SUV, AMG appears to be creating a dedicated electric performance model with styling, technology and performance characteristics developed specifically for the EV era.
The GT-inspired exterior, AMG.EA architecture and potential for extremely high power output could make the upcoming SUV one of Mercedes-AMG’s most significant electric launches yet.
For now, the biggest questions remain unanswered. Mercedes-AMG still needs to reveal the SUV’s official name, battery capacity, range, powertrain configurations, pricing and production timing.
But the latest teaser makes one thing clear: Mercedes-AMG’s next electric performance SUV is moving closer to production, and it looks set to bring the brand’s new GT-inspired EV design language to a much more practical body style.
