Volkswagen ID. ERA 5X Revealed as New Electric SUV for China

Volkswagen is expanding its China-focused ID. ERA electric vehicle lineup with a new compact SUV. The SAIC Volkswagen ID. ERA 5X has entered China’s regulatory approval process, revealing key details about its dimensions, powertrain, battery, and technology.

The ID. ERA 5X is particularly significant because it becomes Volkswagen’s first mass-produced model globally based on the Compact Main Platform (CMP) and the new China Electronic Architecture (CEA).

Both technologies are part of Volkswagen’s broader strategy to accelerate the development of electric vehicles specifically for the Chinese market.

Volkswagen ID. ERA 5X: Design and Dimensions

The ID. ERA 5X follows the design language established by the newer models in Volkswagen’s China-specific ID. ERA family.

At the front, the electric SUV features a full-width daytime running light strip with the Volkswagen badge positioned in the center. The main headlight units sit lower on either side of the front fascia.

The side profile takes on a sporty fastback-inspired shape, giving the compact SUV a more dynamic appearance. A roof-mounted rear spoiler completes the design.

The ID. ERA 5X measures:

– Length: 4,560 mm
– Width: 1,896 mm
– Height: 1,630 mm
– Wheelbase: 2,815 mm
– Seating: 5 passengers

Customers in China will reportedly be able to choose from 17-, 18-, and 19-inch wheels. Volkswagen will also offer several optional exterior features, including different lighting elements, bumpers, side-window trim, a panoramic sunroof and roof racks.

208-HP Electric Powertrain With CATL Battery

The Volkswagen ID. ERA 5X uses a fully electric powertrain, with an electric motor supplied by United Automotive Electronic Systems.

The motor produces a peak 155 kW (208 hp), while the vehicle has a reported top speed of 175 km/h.

Power comes from a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, with battery cells supplied by Chinese battery giant CATL. Volkswagen has not yet disclosed the battery’s capacity or the official driving range.

Those figures will be important when the production-specification model is officially unveiled, particularly as the ID. ERA 5X enters an increasingly competitive Chinese electric SUV market.

Advanced Driver Assistance and LiDAR

The ID. ERA 5X is also expected to bring a significant technology upgrade to Volkswagen’s China lineup.

The electric SUV features a new LiDAR system and Volkswagen’s “Xingyun” intelligent assisted-driving system. The setup is designed to support L2++ urban Navigate on Autopilot (NOA) capabilities.

Inside, the vehicle will feature the “Yunqi” smart cockpit, which is designed to provide a more streamlined human-machine interaction experience.

The advanced electronics are enabled by Volkswagen’s new CEA electrical/electronic architecture, developed jointly with Chinese EV manufacturer XPeng.

First Volkswagen Production Model With CMP and CEA

The ID. ERA 5X marks an important milestone for Volkswagen’s partnership-driven EV strategy in China.

It is the automaker’s first globally produced mass-market model to use the CMP (China Main Platform) architecture. The platform was developed with XPeng as part of Volkswagen’s effort to shorten development times and better compete with China’s rapidly evolving electric vehicle manufacturers.

The CEA architecture is another key part of the partnership. It is designed to provide the electronic foundation for next-generation connected and intelligent Volkswagen EVs in China.

FAW-Volkswagen’s ID. AURA T6, which entered China’s regulatory filing process earlier, was the first model associated with the CEA architecture.

ID. ERA Lineup Expands

The ID. ERA 5X arrives as SAIC Volkswagen continues to build its China-specific electric vehicle lineup.

The company currently has the ID. ERA 9X on sale in China, a range-extended electric SUV that launched in March.

The new 5X will be joined by the ID. ERA 5S sedan, which is scheduled to begin pre-sales on August 11 before its official launch in the third quarter of 2026.

The ID. ERA 5S is also notable for being Volkswagen’s first sedan globally to offer urban NOA capabilities.

With the ID. ERA 5X, 5S and 9X, Volkswagen is rapidly expanding a dedicated EV family designed around the needs of Chinese consumers rather than simply adapting its global ID. models.

Volkswagen ID. ERA 5X: What to Expect

The regulatory filing provides an early look at an electric SUV that could become an important part of Volkswagen’s renewed push in China.

Its compact dimensions, 208-hp electric motor, CATL-supplied LFP battery, LiDAR-based driver assistance and new CMP/CEA architecture give the ID. ERA 5X a distinctly China-focused approach.

Volkswagen has not yet announced the ID. ERA 5X’s battery capacity, official driving range, pricing or launch date. More specifications are expected as the SUV moves closer to its market introduction.

For now, the ID. ERA 5X represents another major step in Volkswagen’s transition toward locally developed electric vehicles and advanced software technology in China’s highly
competitive EV market.
