Ford has issued a new safety recall affecting 86,543 Mustang Mach-E electric SUVs in the United States after discovering that a rear side window trim piece could detach while driving, creating a potential road hazard for other motorists.
According to documents published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the affected vehicles include 2023, 2024, and certain 2025 Ford Mustang Mach-E models built between February 17, 2023, and October 8, 2024.
The recall centers on the rear side quarter window trim, which may not be properly bonded to the glass. If the trim separates while the vehicle is in motion, it could become airborne and strike other vehicles, increasing the risk of a crash.
Ford traced the issue to changes introduced at a supplier’s manufacturing facility in Mexico. A new assembly jig reduced the installation time for the trim component, preventing the primer used in the bonding process from curing long enough. The insufficient curing time weakened the adhesive bond between the trim and the quarter glass.
The supplier, Saint-Gobain Mexico, corrected the manufacturing process in September 2024 by implementing a mandatory 30-second timer during installation to ensure the primer cures properly before assembly continues.
Ford began investigating the issue after a noticeable increase in warranty claims involving loose or detached rear window trim on 2023-2025 Mustang Mach-E vehicles in May.
The automaker has identified 219 reports of loose or detached trim pieces on vehicles covered by the recall. However, Ford said it is not aware of any crashes, injuries, or fatalities related to the defect.
The latest campaign follows another significant Mustang Mach-E recall announced last month involving nearly 43,000 vehicles in the United States.
That separate recall affects certain 2021-2023 rear-wheel-drive Mustang Mach-E models, where the rear differential pinion shaft could fracture because of bending fatigue. A failed differential may leave the vehicle unable to move, increasing the risk of becoming stranded.
What Owners Should Do
Owners of affected Mustang Mach-E vehicles should contact their local Ford dealer or check their vehicle identification number (VIN) through the NHTSA recall database to determine whether their vehicle is included.
Ford dealers will inspect the rear side quarter window trim and replace it if necessary at no cost to customers.
Recall notification letters are expected to be mailed to affected owners, while repairs will be performed free of charge.
Dealer notifications are scheduled to begin in early September, while owner notification letters are expected to be mailed between September 10 and September 14.
