Renault is putting solar-powered electric mobility in the spotlight with the Easee Sun Run, a cross-country challenge that will see the Renault 4 E-Tech electric Plein Sud travel from Land’s End to John O’Groats using only solar-generated energy.
Timed around the summer solstice, the journey will include a symbolic stop at Stonehenge, one of the UK’s most recognisable sun-facing landmarks. The route is intended to demonstrate how solar power is already supporting businesses, communities and new technology projects across Britain.
The Renault 4 E-Tech electric Plein Sud is a fitting choice for the challenge. Its name translates to “due south,” the preferred orientation for solar panels in the northern hemisphere, while its full-length electric canvas roof brings a modern interpretation of the original Renault 4’s fabric roof.
During the journey, the electric crossover will be charged from solar energy collected at installations along the route. Renault will also use portable solar-charged energy storage paired with an Easee Charge Pro three-phase EV charger.
“Stonehenge at the summer solstice is one of Britain’s great sun-filled images, making it the perfect place to stop and highlight the power of solar energy,” said Adam Wood, Managing Director of Renault UK. “The Renault 4 E-Tech electric Plein Sud already invites the outside in, but here the sunshine is doing more than setting the scene – it’s what keeps the car moving.”
The Plein Sud is the only model in its segment available with a fully opening roof. Its 80 x 92 cm electric canvas roof gives occupants an open-air driving experience without reducing luggage capacity. Boot space remains up to 1,350 litres with the rear seats folded.
Like the standard Renault 4 E-Tech electric, the Plein Sud uses a 52 kWh battery and a 150 hp electric motor. Renault quotes a WLTP driving range of up to 242 miles, while DC fast charging at up to 100 kW can replenish the battery from 15% to 80% in around 30 minutes.
The Renault 4 E-Tech electric Plein Sud is available in techno+ and iconic+ trim levels. Prices start from £27,445 on the road, including the UK Electric Car Grant.
Renault and Easee will share further updates, imagery and route details once the solar-powered drive has been completed.
