Walmart and ABB Launch 400 kW EV Fast Chargers Across Phoenix Stores

Walmart and ABB E-mobility have officially launched a new wave of ultra-fast EV charging stations across the Phoenix metropolitan area, marking a major step in their nationwide infrastructure rollout.

The installation of ABB’s A400 All-in-One chargers at seven Walmart locations signals the beginning of a broader plan to integrate high-power charging into everyday retail destinations across the United States.

The initiative is designed to make EV charging as routine and convenient as a weekly shopping trip. With more than 5,200 Walmart and Sam’s Club locations nationwide—and 90% of Americans living within 10 miles of a Walmart store—the retail giant is uniquely positioned to accelerate EV adoption by embedding charging infrastructure where people already spend time.

High-Power Charging Meets Everyday Convenience

At the center of this rollout is the A400 All-in-One fast charger from ABB, capable of delivering up to 400 kW of power. This enables simultaneous charging at 200 kW for two vehicles or the full output directed to a single EV. For drivers, that translates to meaningful range added during a typical grocery run.

Initial installations are live in key Phoenix-area cities including Mesa, Tempe, Apache Junction, and Queen Creek. In total, nine Walmart locations in the region are expected to host 38 chargers in the coming months, creating one of the most robust retail-based charging hubs in the country.

The chargers support both CCS and NACS connectors, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of electric vehicles on U.S. roads. This dual-standard approach eliminates friction for drivers regardless of brand or charging preference.

Building a Scalable, Reliable Charging Network

The collaboration between Walmart and ABB E-mobility goes beyond simple hardware deployment. The infrastructure is designed with scalability and grid reliability in mind, incorporating ABB’s advanced electrical distribution systems to ensure stable, high-performance operation.

The use of ReliaGear® switchboards allows for future upgrades, including integration with battery energy storage systems. This future-proofing ensures that the network can evolve alongside growing EV demand and advancements in energy management.

ABB’s A400 chargers also feature a modular architecture that reduces long-term operating costs while maintaining flexibility for next-generation EV technologies. A 32-inch digital display opens additional opportunities for branding, promotions, and customer engagement directly at the charging station.

Retail Charging: A Growing Business Advantage

Beyond supporting EV drivers, retail-integrated charging is proving to be a strategic business move. Studies indicate that proximity to EV chargers can increase store visits by up to 4%, while longer dwell times during charging sessions translate into higher in-store spending.

Walmart is leveraging this dynamic by integrating EV charging into its existing digital ecosystem. Customers can initiate and manage charging sessions directly through the Walmart app, streamlining the experience and aligning it with the retailer’s broader focus on convenience and personalization.

A Nationwide Rollout Underway

While Phoenix serves as the launchpad, additional installations are already underway in states including Colorado, Florida, and Georgia. The long-term vision is ambitious: a coast-to-coast network of reliable, high-speed chargers anchored at Walmart locations.

By combining widespread retail access with telecom-grade reliability, Walmart and ABB E-mobility are positioning themselves at the forefront of the U.S. EV charging landscape. The strategy reflects a clear shift toward integrating charging into daily routines—removing barriers and making electric mobility more accessible to millions of drivers.
