UK: Four More EVs Now Qualify for the £3,750 Electric Car Grant

The UK government is doubling down on its commitment to electric mobility, adding four new vehicles to the top band of the Electric Car Grant (ECG).

The Renault 4, Alpine A290, Mini Countryman, and the 52kWh Renault 5 are now eligible for the maximum £3,750 discount.

Here is what you will pay after the grant is applied:

– Renault 4 E-Tech: From £23,455
– Renault 5 E-Tech (52kWh version): From £23,945
– Mini Countryman: From £25,350
– Alpine A290: From £30,245

It is worth noting a small quirk in the rules. While the powerful 52kWh Renault 5 gets the full £3,750 discount, the entry-level 40kWh version only qualifies for the lower £1,500 grant. This is because its smaller battery doesn’t meet the strict emissions-based efficiency criteria for the top band.

These four cars join the Nissan Leaf, Ford Puma Gen-E, Ford E-Tourneo Courier, and Citroen e-C5 Aircross in the top savings bracket.

This expansion comes on the heels of the recent budget, which injected an additional £1.5 billion into the ECG scheme and extended its lifespan until 2030. Additionally, £200 million has been earmarked to expand the UK’s charging network.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander highlighted the program’s success, stating, “Our Electric Car Grant has already supported over 40,000 drivers to choose electric… We’re doubling down on our drive to help people buy EVs.”

However, the roadmap also includes new taxation measures, with a pay-per-mile levy for EVs set to be introduced in 2028.
