Ford unveiled a Mustang Mach-E NASCAR, an all-electric race car prototype designed for the American NASCAR racing series.
The Mach-E NASCAR prototype joins Ford’s growing lineup of electric performance vehicles, including the F-150 Lightning SuperTruck and SuperVan 4.2, and builds on their history of motorsport innovation, exemplified by projects like the Mustang Mach-E 1400.
Ford’s extensive motorsports experience, dating back to the 1950s in NASCAR, includes a planned return to the FIA World Endurance Championship (including the 24 Hours of Le Mans) in 2027 and a partnership with Red Bull in Formula 1 for 2026. This push into electric vehicles aligns with the increasing global interest in electrification, as demonstrated by NASCAR’s own 1,300-horsepower electric prototype introduced in 2024.
The Mustang Mach-E NASCAR prototype utilizes existing Cup Series car components, such as suspension, brakes, steering, and wheels, within a lightweight, safety-focused carbon fiber tub. While visually similar to the standard Mach-E, it features distinct modifications, including a two-door design, an internal cage structure, and a large rear wing.
Powered by a 78-kilowatt-hour battery and three electric motors, the prototype delivers 1,360 horsepower in qualifying mode and 816 horsepower in race mode. Weighing approximately 4,000 pounds, it significantly outweighs the consumer Mustang Mach-E GT.
This electric race car could potentially revolutionize NASCAR, a sport traditionally associated with powerful V8 engines. While the quieter nature of electric vehicles might be a point of contention for some fans, Ford aims to showcase the capabilities of electric cars and generate excitement around this technology.
Former NASCAR driver David Ragan has been involved in testing the prototype at tracks like Martinsville Speedway and Carolina Motorsports Park. The vehicle is built using NASCAR’s Next-Gen architecture, incorporating a modified Ford Mustang Dark Horse chassis, lightweight carbon fiber components, and stock Cup Series parts.
The Mustang Mach-E NASCAR is part of Ford’s broader development of high-performance electric vehicles, which includes models like the SuperVan 4.2 and Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800. This mirrors the growing trend of electrification in other racing series like Formula E and Extreme E.
Although a formal racing debut is yet to be announced, the Mustang Mach-E NASCAR prototype is expected to participate in exhibitions, demonstrations, and special events globally.
