Tesla Recalls Nearly 240,000 EVs Due to Faulty Rearview Cameras

Tesla is recalling 239,382 electric vehicles due to a potential issue with their rearview camera displays. The recall encompasses 2024-2025 Model 3 and Model S sedans, as well as 2023-2025 Model X and Model Y crossovers.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that a short circuit in the vehicles’ circuit boards can occur, leading to a complete loss of the rearview camera image. This non-functioning camera violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, which mandates a functional rearview camera.

According to the NHTSA, the short circuit arises from reverse current during startup. Consequently, drivers may encounter a blank screen when shifting into reverse, forcing them to rely solely on shoulder checks and side mirrors while backing up.

Tesla estimates that only 2% of the recalled vehicles are actually affected by this defect. While the automaker has received 887 warranty claims and 68 field reports related to this issue, they have not reported any accidents, injuries, or fatalities associated with it.

To address this issue, Tesla has released a free over-the-air (OTA) software update. However, they will also proactively identify and replace the affected computers in vehicles exhibiting circuit board failure or signs of component stress, all at no cost to the owner.

Tesla anticipates mailing owner notification letters on March 7, 2025. In the interim, owners can contact the customer service department for further information at 877-798-3752. Tesla’s reference number for this recall is SB-25-00-001.
