MINI reveals retro-inspired interior for new Cooper Electric

Revealing another layer, MINI has issued a teaser of the interior design that will be featured on future MINI models. The first of these models that make up the New MINI Family are set to debut at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Munich Germany September 1.

The teaser includes two animated digital films that specifically feature the dashboard, driver controls and the signature round OLED screen that is the centerpiece of the new MINI interiors.

One video asset reveals the MINI dashboard with the center screen animating the “Welcome“ sequence which greets passengers when they enter the car.

The second shows an evolutionary morphing of the dashboard through time from the very first 1959 Mini up to the next all-new generation MINI Cooper Electric that will be officially revealed in September.

This teaser reveals another element of the dramatic new MINI design language which embraces a thoroughly modern interpretation of the original MINI design.

With a more minimalist interior, MINI is “more MINI” than ever before. Looking back to the first Mini in 1959, the car’s instrument panel featured three main interior design elements: a steering wheel, a round center instrument and a simple row of toggle switches, or toggle bar. These three elements describe the new design approach today, knitting design simplicity and technology together to bring the original MINI identity to life. The main design elements today include a steering wheel that is now smaller and sportier, a signature round OLED digital display – and a toggle bar just below with a few essential apologue controls.

This reduction to the few most iconic elements gave MINI designers more creative space for digital and visual interaction with a host of new, digitally amplified experiences using technologies that enable even more options for personalization. The new dashboard offers an immersive experience that includes light, sounds, animations, and projections – creating a very strong emotional statement and making the MINI your “digital partner “.

A “knitted surface texture on the dashboard provides the stage for unique and changing light projections that respond to the new MINI Experience Modes, some of which automatically sense and adjust to complement screen content color themes. More details on the digital interface and user experience will be shared in the coming week, with the full reveal – inside and out – of two of the first new MINI Family members to occur at the IAA in September.
