Renault ZOE And Tesla Model S Revealed As Europe’s Most Popular Electric Cars

NewMotion, Europe’s largest provider of smart charging solutions for electric vehicles, today revealed the top ten EVs in the UK and Europe.

In its second annual survey, NewMotion surveyed almost 7,000 EV users across Europe to determine the most popular electric vehicle and the evolution of our changing relationship with driving.

Leading the race for poll position in the UK is the Nissan LEAF, with 28% of drivers picking this as their EV of choice. The Nissan LEAF’s mid-range price point and ample battery rage (up to 176 miles on a single charge) may have helped to make this the UK’s number one. The Tesla Model S came a close second, a popular pick with 25% of EV drivers opting for this make and model. BMW’s i3 placed third on the list with just over 11% of the vote.

The UK’s commitment to going green is demonstrated by the strong growth of EV in the past five years. UK sales of plug-in cars – pure electric and hybrids – has increased from 3,500 in 2013 to more than 135,000 by the end of January 2018; helped by the installation of 14,900 public charge points nationally. Overall 2017 was a large year for electric vehicle registrations with strong growth of 27%, showing increased consumer appetite for 100% electric and plug-in hybrid cars.

Additionally, 84% of EV owners in the UK have opted for a fully electric vehicle (rather than a hybrid) compared to 67% in Europe.  This preference for fully electric reflects the UK’s confidence in the future of EV alongside the Government’s commitment to investing in sustainable transport and EV infrastructure nationally.

The EV landscape in Europe

The European landscape is slightly different, with EVs doing well in their country of production.  Overall 15% of all survey respondents across Europe chose the Renault ZOE, making it Europe’s most popular full battery EV. With a driving range of 230–260 miles, the latest model goes a long way to addressing consuming anxiety about EV battery length. In second place, with 14% of the vote, is the Tesla Model S, another full battery EV. This model has one of the largest driving ranges on the market, giving users a range of up to 393 miles on a single battery charge. In third position is the Mitsubishi Outlander, with 10% of people opting for the plug-in hybrid model.
