We’ve known that Maserati is going to add a plug-in hybrid version for every model in its range in an attempt to meet emission reduction targets by 2020.
The first Maserati to get a plug-in hybrid powertrain will be the Levante SUV in early 2018.
The Maserati Levante will use drivetrain components shared with other products throughout the Fiat Chrysler (FCA) family.
Speaking with Motor Trend at the recent Geneva Motor Show, Harald Wester, CEO of Maserati, said that developing a standalone powertrain would “be suicidal so we have to look at FCA.”
The Pacifica Hybrid combine a naturally aspirated 3.6-liter engine with two electric motors and a 16 kWh battery located under the floor. It’s expected to achieve 80 MPGe and do 30 miles on electricity alone
It’s not entirely clear which components the Levante plug-in hybrid will take from the front-wheel drive only Pacifica PHEV. Given that the Levante rides on a rear- and all-wheel drive platform shared with the Ghibli.
Production of the Maserati Levante began this week in Italy. The SUV goes on sale in Europe this May and will arrive in the U.S. around the end of August.
