Raser to Develop Electric Vehicles with Hyundai

Raser Technologies and Korean Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) are teaming up to develop renewable energy projects and electric vehicles.

This isn’t yet a done deal with contracts signed, but the two companies have signed a memorandum of understanding to co-develop solar power and electric vehicles which they call the “Well To Wheels” demonstration project.

Using Provo, Utah-based Raser’s resources and Hyundai’s manufacturing capability, the companies plan to develop renewable energy in the western U.S. One project would use solar panels built by Hyundai next to a Raser geothermal power plant in Utah to demonstrate blended renewable power. Wind power also could be added, as Hyundai also makes turbines and other wind power equipment.

The agreement also sets forth a plan to produce three extended range electric trucks (E-REV) for use by government and commercial fleets in the U.S. The companies expect to deliver the first electric trucks to California utility Pacific Gas & Electric Co. within a few months.

At the 2009 SAE World Congress, Raser unveiled a HUMMER H3 E-REV propelled entirely on electricity by Raser’s Symetron 200kW advanced AC induction motor connected to a 4WD automatic transmission. A 100 kW Rase Symetron generator, driven by a GM Ecotec 2.0L SIDI turbocharged engine provides electrical power. A liquid-cooled, 41 kWh lithium-ion battery pack operates at 700V and provides the energy storage. Road test drive of the HUMMER H3 E-REV showed over 50 miles of all-electric range.
