BYD DOLPHIN G DM-i Debuts in Europe with 646-Mile Range and EV-Like Driving Experience

BYD has unveiled the all-new DOLPHIN G DM-i, a compact hatchback developed specifically for European buyers. Positioned in the highly competitive B-segment, the new model combines the benefits of electric driving with the flexibility of long-distance hybrid travel, introducing BYD’s latest Super Hybrid DM-i technology to a broader audience.

The DOLPHIN G DM-i is designed to appeal to drivers seeking affordable electrified mobility without range anxiety. Thanks to its EV-focused plug-in hybrid powertrain, the hatchback can travel up to 65 miles (105 km) on electric power alone, while delivering a total driving range of up to 646 miles (1,040 km) when combining battery and gasoline power.

BYD Targets Europe’s Largest Vehicle Segment

The B-segment remains one of Europe’s most important automotive categories, and BYD is aiming to redefine customer expectations with the DOLPHIN G DM-i.

Measuring 4,160 mm long and 1,825 mm wide, the hatchback combines compact urban-friendly dimensions with a confident stance. The design follows BYD’s latest Ocean Series styling language, featuring sleek curves, a distinctive shoulder line, full-width LED rear lighting, and a floating-roof effect.

Despite its compact footprint, the DOLPHIN G DM-i offers impressive interior space. A 2,610 mm wheelbase helps maximize passenger room for five adults, while the luggage compartment provides 425 liters of cargo space. Folding the rear seats expands capacity to 1,225 liters, making the vehicle practical for both everyday commuting and longer journeys.

Inside, the cabin focuses on simplicity and functionality. A standard 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster is paired with either a 10.1-inch or 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment display, depending on trim level. The gear selector is mounted on the steering column, freeing up additional storage space in the center console.

EV-Led Hybrid Technology

At the heart of the DOLPHIN G DM-i is BYD’s Super Hybrid DM-i system, which prioritizes electric propulsion in most driving situations. Unlike many conventional plug-in hybrids, the electric motor handles the majority of driving duties, delivering the smooth and responsive feel of a battery-electric vehicle.

Power comes from a 163 PS (120 kW) permanent-magnet synchronous motor producing 210 Nm of torque. This setup allows the hatchback to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 8.3 seconds.

The hybrid system combines a 1.5-liter gasoline engine, two electric motors, and BYD’s Blade Battery technology. Intelligent energy management continuously switches between different operating modes to optimize efficiency, performance, and battery charging.

The result is a remarkably efficient package. BYD claims weighted fuel consumption of up to 201.7 mpg (WLTP, with a fully charged battery), while the larger-battery variants achieve CO₂ emissions as low as 32 g/km.

Two Battery Options Available

The DOLPHIN G DM-i will be offered with two Blade Battery configurations.

The entry-level Active model features a 7.42 kWh battery, delivering up to 24.8 miles (40 km) of electric-only range and a combined driving range of approximately 633 miles (1,020 km).

Boost, Comfort, and Sport versions receive a larger 18.3 kWh battery pack, increasing electric range to 65 miles (105 km) and extending total range to 646 miles (1,040 km).

Charging capabilities vary by trim. Active models include a 3.3 kW onboard charger, while higher trims receive a 6.6 kW charger and support DC fast charging up to 39 kW. Under optimal conditions, the larger battery can charge from 10% to 80% in just 26 minutes.

Four Trim Levels with Extensive Equipment

BYD will offer the DOLPHIN G DM-i in four versions: Active, Boost, Comfort, and Sport.

Even the entry-level Active trim comes generously equipped with LED lighting, front and rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera, automatic climate control, smartphone connectivity via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and intelligent voice control.

The Boost trim adds the larger battery, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, ambient lighting, wireless phone charging, rear USB ports, and an upgraded eight-speaker audio system. It also introduces Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability, allowing external devices to draw power directly from the vehicle.

Comfort models move further upmarket with features such as a panoramic roof, head-up display, 360-degree camera system, larger alloy wheels, upgraded seating materials, and Google integration, including Google Maps and Google Assistant.

At the top of the range, the Sport trim adds unique styling elements, darker 18-inch wheels, special badging, and exclusive interior finishes inspired by motorsport design.

Advanced Safety Across the Lineup

Safety is a major focus for the new hatchback. Every DOLPHIN G DM-i comes standard with a comprehensive suite of driver-assistance technologies, including:

– Adaptive Cruise Control
– Intelligent Cruise Control
– Emergency Lane Keeping Assist
– Lane Departure Assist
– Blind Spot Detection
– Front and Rear Cross Traffic Alert
– Driver Monitoring System
– Door Opening Warning

Comfort and Sport trims further enhance visibility with a 360-degree camera system.

European Launch Scheduled for Autumn

The BYD DOLPHIN G DM-i will be available in six exterior colors, including Ocean Blue, Obsidian Black, Time Grey, Skiing White, Oxford White, and Orange Sunset.

European dealerships are expected to begin accepting orders this summer, with first customer deliveries scheduled for early autumn.

With its combination of long electric driving range, class-leading overall range, spacious interior, and extensive technology package, the DOLPHIN G DM-i could become one of the most compelling electrified options in Europe’s highly competitive supermini segment.
