WeRide and Uber to Launch Spain’s First Commercial Robotaxi Service in Madrid

WeRide and Uber have announced plans to launch Spain’s first commercial Robotaxi pilot in the Region of Madrid, marking the partners’ first autonomous mobility deployment in Europe.

The service is expected to begin operations later this year in collaboration with Madrid’s Regional Government (Comunidad de Madrid), with rides available through the Uber app. Initially, the fleet will include trained vehicle operators as the companies work toward expanding fully driverless commercial operations across key urban areas.

The Madrid launch represents another major milestone in the growing partnership between WeRide and Uber, which has already introduced fully driverless Robotaxi services in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. A launch in Riyadh is expected to follow, further expanding the companies’ autonomous mobility footprint in the Middle East.

Madrid Chosen as Key European Robotaxi Market

The deployment highlights WeRide’s asset-light business model, which relies on strategic partners for fleet operations and investment while leveraging its autonomous driving technology platform.

In Madrid, transportation services will be supported by AVOMO, a Moove Cars Group company that already serves as Uber’s autonomous vehicle fleet operations partner in Atlanta and Austin. The Robotaxi fleet will operate using WeRide’s self-driving technology, with plans to gradually scale as operational milestones are achieved.

Madrid is widely viewed as one of Europe’s most promising markets for autonomous mobility due to its large urban population, strong transportation demand, and supportive regulatory environment. WeRide plans to utilize its WeRide One universal technology platform and GENESIS simulation platform to accelerate deployment while maintaining safety and reliability standards.

Part of a Broader Global Expansion

The Madrid launch becomes the fourth city announced under the existing partnership agreement between WeRide and Uber. The companies previously outlined plans to expand autonomous mobility services to 15 cities worldwide by 2030.

Over the coming years, the partnership aims to deploy tens of thousands of Robotaxis on public roads, helping bring autonomous transportation services to more riders across major global markets.

“Launching driverless Robotaxis in Madrid, one of Europe’s fastest-growing urban environments, demonstrates our ability to operate safely in complex real-world conditions,” said Dr. Tony Han, Founder and CEO of WeRide. He added that Spain represents the company’s fifth European market and further strengthens its position as a Robotaxi operator across the continent.

Uber also highlighted Madrid’s importance within its global autonomous mobility strategy.

“Madrid represents an important next step in our partnership with WeRide to bring autonomous mobility to more people around the world,” said Sarfraz Maredia, Global Head of Autonomous Mobility & Delivery at Uber. “With a clear regulatory path and strong local partners, Madrid is a natural place to become a leading European market for AVs.”

AVOMO Expands International Autonomous Mobility Operations

For AVOMO and its parent company, Moove Cars Group, the project represents a significant step in international expansion. The company has worked closely with Uber in the United States for nearly two years and now plans to leverage that experience to build scalable autonomous mobility operations in new markets.

As autonomous vehicle technology continues to advance, Madrid is set to become one of Europe’s first major cities to offer commercial Robotaxi services through a global mobility platform, potentially accelerating broader adoption of driverless transportation across the region.
