Volt Sets New Sales Record in August, Leaf Sales Continue to Fall From Last Year [update]

Chevrolet Volt
has set new monthly sales record with 2,831 U.S. deliveries in August, 542 units over its previous best monthly record of 2,289 set in March 2012.

So far this year, GM has sold 13,497 Chevrolet Volts, up 325.5 percent over the same period last year. Last month, GM sold 1,849 Volts.

GM said it will close the Volt factory in Detroit for four weeks beginning September 17th to control inventory and retool the plant to build the new Chevrolet Impala. However, GM did over-produce to demand this month, building 3,688 Volts this month.

Meanwhile, the Nissan Leaf sold 685 in August, up from 395 sold in July. A year ago, Nissan sold 1,362 Leaf EVs.

For the year, Nissan has sold 4,228 Leaf EVs, down 31.5 percent.

UPDATE
Deliveries of the Prius Plug-in Hybrid totaled 1,047 units in August, up from 668 in July and 695 in June. For the year—February through August—Toyota has sold 6,082 Prius Plug-in Hybrids in the U.S.

Honda reported selling 9 Fit EVs in July. Only 1,100 Honda Fit EVs will be available for lease-only in key markets starting in California and Oregon over the next 18 months, after which availability will expand to East Coast markets in early 2013.

Mitsubishi sold 37 ‘i’ electric cars in August. In July Mitsubishi sold 33 ‘i’ electric cars (same number for June), with the 88 units sold in May still topping their results.

Ford sold 34 units of the Focus Electric in August, bringing the year to date total to 169 units.

Year-to-date, plug-in hybrid sales have totalled 19,579 units, while the battery-electric vehicle sales reached 4,406 units.
