Volkswagen ID. Tiguan Debuts With Up to 600 km Range and a Starting Price of €42,695

Volkswagen has unveiled the new ID. Tiguan, an all-electric midsize SUV designed to combine a more premium interior, improved practicality and a driving range of up to 600 kilometers. Set to launch in early 2027, the new model will succeed the ID.4 and ID.5 in Volkswagen’s electric vehicle lineup while offering a familiar Tiguan name in a fully electric package.

Built on the company’s upgraded MEB+ platform, the ID. Tiguan will be available with three powertrain configurations, including a dual-motor 4MOTION all-wheel-drive version. Volkswagen has also introduced a redesigned cockpit, a larger infotainment system and, for the first time in a European Volkswagen, a dedicated passenger display.

Pre-sales in Germany and several other European markets are scheduled to begin on October 13, with prices starting at €42,695.

Volkswagen ID. Tiguan: Range, Battery and Performance

The new Volkswagen ID. Tiguan will launch with three powertrain options, covering different performance and range requirements. The entry-level model features rear-wheel drive and a 58 kWh battery, while the two more powerful versions use a larger 77 kWh battery.

The lineup includes:

– ID. Tiguan 58 kWh: Rear-wheel drive, 140 kW (190 PS) and a towing capacity of up to 1,800 kg.
– ID. Tiguan 77 kWh: Rear-wheel drive, 210 kW (286 PS) and a towing capacity of up to 2,000 kg.
– ID. Tiguan 4MOTION: All-wheel drive, 220 kW (299 PS) and a 77 kWh battery

Depending on the configuration, the electric SUV will deliver a WLTP-rated driving range of up to 600 km. Volkswagen has not yet detailed the individual range figures for every version.

The towing capability is a notable feature for an electric SUV in this segment. With the larger battery, the ID. Tiguan can tow up to 2,000 kg, making it a potential option for buyers who need an electric vehicle for trailers and other demanding everyday tasks.

Practicality extends to storage space. The SUV features a 32-liter front trunk, commonly known as a frunk, and a rear luggage compartment offering up to 534 liters of capacity.

Four equipment levels will be available: Trend, Life, Style and R-Line, allowing buyers to choose between different comfort, technology and styling packages.

A More Premium Design for Volkswagen’s Electric SUV

The Volkswagen ID. Tiguan introduces the brand’s Pure Positive design language, replacing the softer crossover appearance of its predecessors with a more substantial and traditional SUV profile.

Sharper lines, sculpted body panels and a more confident front-end design give the vehicle a more upscale appearance. Volkswagen says the new model has been developed to look and feel like a vehicle from a higher market segment.

Another notable change is the return of conventional pull-style exterior door handles, moving away from some of the more unconventional solutions seen on modern electric vehicles.

The redesigned exterior is accompanied by a substantially upgraded cabin, with Volkswagen focusing on material quality, improved ergonomics and a more intuitive arrangement of the controls.

New Volkswagen ID. Tiguan Interior Features a Passenger Display

The cabin is one of the biggest changes in the new electric SUV. Volkswagen has redesigned the dashboard around three displays, creating a continuous digital environment for the driver and front passenger.

The setup consists of a 10-inch Digital Cockpit for the driver, a 15-inch central infotainment touchscreen and a 12-inch passenger display.

The passenger screen is particularly noteworthy because it allows the front passenger to access infotainment, information and gaming features without distracting the driver. A privacy mode prevents the display’s content from being visible from the driver’s seat, while compatible Bluetooth headphones allow passengers to listen to audio independently.

Volkswagen has also responded to customer feedback by bringing back physical controls for frequently used functions. Climate settings can be adjusted through a dedicated button bar on the center console, while a new multifunction steering wheel replaces touch-sensitive controls with physical buttons.

Audio volume and track selection are handled through an accessible controller, and the redesigned door controls are intended to improve everyday usability.

Two wireless charging pads at the front support the Qi2 standard and feature magnetic positioning to help secure compatible smartphones.

Retro Displays Bring Back Classic Volkswagen Designs

The ID. Tiguan also introduces a feature designed to appeal to Volkswagen enthusiasts: customizable retro-inspired digital displays.

Activated through the multifunction steering wheel, the Retro mode transforms the Digital Cockpit with blue and red instrumentation inspired by the fourth-generation Volkswagen Golf.

A traditional-style speedometer appears on the left, while the right-hand instrument displays the electric power flow rather than engine revolutions.

The central infotainment screen can also be personalized with a virtual garage featuring six classic and recognizable Volkswagen models: the Golf I, Golf II Country, Golf IV, first-generation Tiguan, Race Touareg and Beetle.

The feature adds a nostalgic touch to the otherwise modern digital interior, combining familiar Volkswagen design elements with the capabilities of an electric vehicle.

Driver Assistance and Optional Comfort Features

Volkswagen will equip the ID. Tiguan with a range of driver assistance and convenience technologies. One-pedal driving will be standard, allowing drivers to control acceleration and achieve strong deceleration primarily through the accelerator pedal.

The new Connected Travel Assist system will offer additional driving support, including assisted lane changes on motorways. Volkswagen also says the system can automatically bring the vehicle to a stop at red traffic lights under supported conditions.

Additional comfort features will be available as options. These include electrically adjustable front seats with massage, memory and ventilation functions, a panoramic sunroof and a 480-watt Harman Kardon sound system.

Together, these features position the ID. Tiguan as more than an electric replacement for the ID.4 and ID.5, with a stronger emphasis on comfort and premium equipment.

Digital Key and Vehicle-to-Load Add More Practicality

The new electric SUV will also support a Digital Key, allowing owners to lock, unlock and start the vehicle using a compatible smartphone. Access can be shared with family members, friends or colleagues through the Volkswagen app.

Another practical addition is Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality. Using an adapter connected to the vehicle’s charging socket, owners can power compatible electrical equipment, including e-bikes and electric grills.

These features reflect Volkswagen’s broader effort to make its electric vehicles more useful beyond everyday commuting.

Volkswagen ID. Tiguan Launch Date and Price

Volkswagen plans to launch the ID. Tiguan in early 2027, with the model offered alongside the conventional Tiguan, which continues to use petrol, diesel and hybrid powertrains.

Pre-sales in Germany and several other European countries will begin on October 13, at a starting price of €42,695.

The new electric SUV brings together the familiar appeal of the Tiguan name, a claimed driving range of up to 600 km, towing capability of up to 2,000 kg and a more advanced interior. Its combination of range, storage capacity and technology could make it an important model in Volkswagen’s European electric vehicle strategy.

However, its eventual competitiveness will also depend on final market specifications, real-world driving range, charging performance and how the different trim levels are priced.

With the ID. Tiguan, Volkswagen is aiming to make its next generation of electric SUVs more practical, more intuitive and more premium, while retaining the everyday usability that has made the conventional Tiguan one of its most important models.
