Hyundai Mobis has begun full-scale mass production of electric vehicle powertrain systems in Europe, opening a new production facility in Nováky, Slovakia, as the company expands its presence in the region’s growing EV supply chain.
The new plant is Hyundai Mobis’ first European facility dedicated to producing complete PE (Power Electric) systems, an integrated electric powertrain that combines an electric motor, inverter and reduction gear. The company says the facility will strengthen its ability to supply EV components to Hyundai, Kia and other global automakers operating in Europe.
The Slovak plant represents Hyundai Mobis’ third electrification production base in Europe, following battery system assembly (BSA) facilities in the Czech Republic and Spain.
Located in Nováky in Slovakia’s Trenčín Region, the new Hyundai Mobis facility occupies a site of approximately 106,000 square meters, with around 8,500 square meters of total floor space.
The factory includes production lines for stators, which are a key component of electric motors, along with inverters and other powertrain components. Hyundai Mobis estimates that the facility can produce up to 280,000 PE systems annually.
The company has invested approximately KRW 250 billion in the new facility to expand its European manufacturing capabilities and create a production base capable of responding more quickly to automaker demand.
The plant officially opened during a ceremony attended by around 100 government officials, automotive industry representatives, suppliers and media members. Among those present were Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, Deputy Prime Minister and Economy Minister Denisa Saková, and Trenčín Region Governor Jaroslav Baška.
Why Slovakia Is Important for Hyundai Mobis
Slovakia has become an important manufacturing center for Europe’s automotive industry, with major automakers including Kia, Volkswagen, Stellantis and Volvo operating production facilities in the country.
That makes the location particularly strategic for Hyundai Mobis as automakers accelerate the transition from internal-combustion vehicles to electric models.
Rather than simply supplying individual components, Hyundai Mobis is positioning the Nováky facility as an integrated European hub for EV electrification systems. The company expects the plant to supply PE systems and other key components to both Hyundai Motor and Kia, while also pursuing business with other global automakers.
The move gives Hyundai Mobis a production base closer to European customers while reducing the logistical challenges associated with shipping large and complex EV powertrain components from other regions.
PE Systems Are at the Center of EV Powertrains
A PE system effectively brings several critical parts of an electric powertrain together.
The electric motor converts electrical energy into mechanical power, while the inverter manages the conversion and delivery of electrical energy between the battery and motor. The reduction gear then transfers the motor’s output to the wheels at an appropriate speed and torque.
By developing and manufacturing these components as an integrated system, Hyundai Mobis aims to improve its competitiveness as automakers look for more efficient and cost-effective EV platforms.
The company already has expertise across several major EV component categories, including battery system assemblies and electric powertrains. Its global electrification manufacturing footprint includes facilities in South Korea, the United States, the Czech Republic, Spain, Indonesia and now Slovakia.
Hyundai Mobis Targets More Global EV Business
The European expansion is part of a broader strategy by Hyundai Mobis to increase its business with automakers outside the Hyundai Motor Group.
Europe is particularly important because it represents the world’s second-largest EV market after China. Establishing manufacturing capacity within the region allows Hyundai Mobis to be closer to major customers while strengthening its position in the increasingly competitive global EV component industry.
Hyundai Mobis has previously outlined a goal of increasing the proportion of its revenue generated from global customers to 40% by 2033. Expanding its European electrification footprint is expected to play an important role in reaching that target.
The Nováky plant could therefore become more than a production site for Hyundai and Kia. With annual capacity of up to 280,000 PE systems and proximity to several major European automakers, it gives Hyundai Mobis an additional platform for winning future EV component contracts.
As automakers continue expanding their electric vehicle lineups, demand for integrated electric powertrains, inverters and other electrification technologies is expected to remain a key part of the industry’s transition.
