The Volvo EX30 is gaining a useful new capability that could make its battery valuable even when the vehicle is parked. A new free over-the-air software update enables Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, allowing the electric SUV to supply power to external devices directly from its battery.
The update is rolling out globally to both new and existing Volvo EX30 owners over the coming weeks. Alongside V2L, Volvo is also introducing Plug & Charge in select European markets, plus several improvements to the EX30’s infotainment experience.
Volvo EX30 Can Now Power External Devices
The biggest addition is the ability to use the Volvo EX30 as a mobile power source.
Using an adapter connected to the vehicle’s external charging port, owners can plug in compatible electrical equipment and draw energy from the EX30’s high-voltage battery. The system can provide up to 3 kW of power at 16 amps, making it suitable for a variety of everyday applications.
That could include running a coffee maker at a sports event, powering tools at a work site, operating cooking equipment while camping or keeping essential appliances running during a power outage.
The EX30 automatically stops supplying electricity if the vehicle’s battery drops below 20%, helping prevent the battery from being completely depleted.
This functionality is known as Vehicle-to-Load (V2L), a form of bidirectional charging technology. Rather than simply charging the vehicle, the battery can also send electricity back out to power external equipment.
Volvo says the EX30 is among the early adopters of V2L technology in the premium compact EV segment. The capability is also available on the fully electric Volvo EX60, with additional Volvo models expected to gain similar functionality in the future.
Plug & Charge Simplifies Public Charging
The software update also brings Plug & Charge to the Volvo EX30 in certain European markets.
At compatible public charging stations, drivers can simply connect the charging cable and let the vehicle handle the authentication process automatically. There is no need to open a charging app, use a charging card or complete additional steps before charging begins.
For EV drivers who regularly use public charging networks, the feature could remove one of the more frustrating parts of the charging experience.
Availability depends on the market and compatible charging infrastructure.
EX30 Gets a Simpler User Interface
Volvo is also using the update to improve the EX30’s in-car software.
The settings menu has been redesigned to reduce complexity and make frequently used controls easier to find. A new customizable contextual bar can also display functions and actions based on what the driver is likely to need.
The changes reflect Volvo’s broader strategy of treating vehicle software as an evolving part of the ownership experience rather than something that remains unchanged after a vehicle leaves the factory.
Because the update is delivered over the air, existing EX30 owners can receive the new functionality without visiting a dealership.
Software Is Becoming a Bigger Part of EV Ownership
The latest EX30 update highlights how software can add meaningful capabilities to an electric vehicle years after it reaches customers.
V2L, in particular, gives the EX30 a new role beyond transportation. Its battery can become a source of electricity for outdoor activities, emergencies, work equipment and other situations where access to a conventional power outlet is limited.
As more EV manufacturers adopt bidirectional charging, features such as V2L could become increasingly common. For the Volvo EX30, the technology turns an already useful electric crossover into something that can also function as a portable power station.
The new software update is free and is being distributed to Volvo EX30 vehicles globally in stages.
