Scout Motors is giving its upcoming electric Traveler SUV two very different personalities.
The automaker has unveiled two new Traveler concept vehicles—the Mountainside and trail-ready concepts—to demonstrate how the electric SUV can combine premium comfort with serious off-road capability. Both concepts will make their public debut alongside the Scout Terra pickup at the Jazz Aspen Snowmass Labor Day Experience in Snowmass, Colorado, September 4-6, 2026.
While the Mountainside concept takes the Traveler in a warmer and more upscale direction, the trail-ready version is designed to look at home far beyond the pavement.
The two concepts are essentially a showcase of the Traveler’s versatility, highlighting how Scout plans to appeal to buyers who want either a refined family SUV or a rugged electric adventure vehicle.
Scout Traveler Mountainside Concept Brings a More Premium Feel
The Traveler Mountainside is the more sophisticated of the two concepts, with Scout Motors focusing on upscale materials, natural colors and a comfortable cabin.
Its exterior is finished in Morning Dusk, a deep charcoal-brown shade with subtle golden metallic highlights that become more noticeable in direct sunlight. The concept also gets a panoramic sunroof, 22-inch Vault wheels with anodized black and brushed finishes, and large 35-inch tires.
Inside, the Mountainside uses an Alpine District theme with semi-aniline leather, gray woven fabrics and recycled walnut trim. The materials are intended to give the cabin a premium but outdoors-inspired character rather than turning the Traveler into a conventional luxury SUV.
Scout has also incorporated subtle references to its heritage. A plaid pattern inspired by historic Scout interiors is used throughout the cabin, while houndstooth fabric appears on the headliner and pillars.
Physical controls remain a major part of the design. The door handles, buttons and knobs are designed to be tactile and easy to operate, while stainless-steel speaker covers feature Scout’s distinctive Harvester-inspired grid pattern.
The overall result is a Traveler that looks better suited to a mountain retreat than a muddy trail—but it retains the rugged proportions that define the SUV.
Trail-Ready Scout Traveler Is Built to Get Dirty
The second concept takes the opposite approach.
The trail-ready Scout Traveler emphasizes the SUV’s off-road potential with a much more aggressive design and a collection of adventure-focused accessories.
Its exterior wears a Galvanized Steel finish inspired by raw metal and industrial equipment. The roof is finished in contrasting Canvas, adding some visual warmth to the otherwise functional design.
Scout has equipped the concept with:
– Full-metal front and rear bumpers
– Integrated front winch
– Rear tow hitch
– Elevated roof rack with forward-facing trail lights
– Rock rails
– Exterior spare-tire carrier
– Integrated fuel caddy
– 18-inch black beadlock wheels
– 35-inch off-road tires
– Open-air Cabana Top roof
The combination gives the trail-ready Traveler a substantially more rugged appearance than the Mountainside model.
The 35-inch tires and beadlock-style wheels are particularly notable, as they reinforce the idea that Scout wants the Traveler to compete for attention among serious off-road SUVs rather than simply offer another electric crossover with an adventurous appearance.
The Interior Gets a Completely Different Personality
Scout also changed the cabin dramatically between the two concepts.
The trail-ready Traveler uses a Denim District interior inspired by American workwear and Scout’s agricultural heritage.
Brick Red leather covers the dashboard, seats, armrests and grab handles, while denim-inspired materials appear across the upper seating surfaces, door panels and accessory straps.
Compared with the understated Mountainside interior, the trail-ready version feels considerably more rugged and utilitarian.
That contrast is intentional. Scout says the two concepts demonstrate two distinct interpretations of the same Traveler platform while retaining the capability, authenticity and versatility associated with the Scout brand.
Scout Traveler Production Is Getting Closer
The concepts arrive as Scout Motors moves closer to production.
The company is building its new manufacturing facility in Blythewood, South Carolina, where more than 4,000 employees are expected to assemble the Scout Traveler SUV and Scout Terra pickup.
Scout has already begun testing early prototype vehicles as it prepares for production.
Customer deliveries of the Traveler are expected to begin in 2028.
Interestingly, the production rollout is expected to start with the Harvester range-extended version rather than the fully electric model. Scout has indicated that demand for the range-extended configuration is currently stronger than for the battery-electric variant.
The Harvester is expected to combine a four-cylinder engine used as a generator with a 63-kWh lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery pack and could offer approximately 500 miles of range.
That setup could give Scout an important advantage among buyers who want an electric driving experience but remain concerned about charging infrastructure and long-distance travel.
Will Scout Offer These Features on Production Models?
One of the biggest questions surrounding the two concepts is how much of their equipment will eventually become available on production Travelers.
Scout has not confirmed that either concept will be sold as a dedicated package. However, several of the trail-ready features would make logical additions to the production vehicle’s options catalog.
Beadlock-style wheels, roof racks, rock rails, winches and other off-road equipment could appeal strongly to the adventure-focused buyers Scout is targeting.
At the other end of the spectrum, the Mountainside concept demonstrates how the Traveler could be configured as a more premium family SUV without losing its distinctive design.
That flexibility could become one of the Traveler’s biggest selling points.
Two Traveler Concepts, One Very Different Electric SUV
The Scout Traveler is shaping up to be one of the more distinctive electric SUVs entering the market.
The Mountainside concept focuses on premium materials, comfort and a warm cabin, while the trail-ready Traveler goes all-in on rugged styling and off-road equipment. Together, they show how broadly Scout intends to position the SUV.
With production preparations underway and customer deliveries scheduled for 2028, the Traveler is moving closer to becoming a production reality.
The bigger question now is how much of these two concept vehicles will make it into Scout’s final option and accessory lineup.
If Scout can retain the Traveler’s rugged character while offering both premium and serious off-road configurations, it could carve out a unique position among electric SUVs from established competitors such as Rivian and other adventure-focused brands.
