
US robotics startup Revoy has secured $27 million in Series A funding to expand production of its innovative detachable electric truck dolly, a technology designed to help existing diesel trucks reduce fuel consumption and emissions without requiring a full battery-electric replacement.
The San Francisco-based company believes its solution could accelerate heavy-duty transport electrification by allowing fleet operators to continue using their existing trucks while adding electric propulsion for part of every journey.
Electric Assistance for Existing Diesel Trucks
Unlike conventional battery-electric trucks that replace the entire vehicle, Revoy’s system is a powered dolly that fits between a truck’s tractor and trailer. Equipped with its own electric motor and battery pack, the unit provides additional propulsion during acceleration while recovering energy through regenerative braking.
The system continuously monitors the driver’s inputs. When the driver accelerates, the electric drivetrain automatically supplies torque, reducing the workload on the diesel engine. During braking, the electric motor switches into regenerative mode to recharge the battery.
According to Revoy, the electric dolly can move a fully loaded 80,000-pound (36.3-tonne) Class 8 truck for more than 200 miles (322 km) on a single charge while cutting carbon emissions by up to 85%.
A Lower-Cost Path to Truck Electrification
One of the biggest obstacles facing commercial fleet electrification remains the high purchase price of battery-electric heavy-duty trucks and the long replacement cycle for freight vehicles.
Revoy’s approach avoids those challenges by allowing fleet operators to electrify existing diesel tractors rather than replacing them with entirely new electric trucks. The company owns and maintains the powered dollies, while customers continue operating their current vehicles.
“Our technology allows you to compete with diesel at cost, which is not true yet for other electric trucks in the U.S.,” said Revoy CEO Peter Reinhardt.
The company says operating costs can be comparable to diesel-powered trucking while significantly reducing fuel consumption and emissions.
Commercial Operations Begin Later This Year
Founded in 2020, Revoy received regulatory approval from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in 2023 and completed a year-long technical pilot with Ryder System before preparing for commercial deployment.
The startup plans to launch its first commercial service later this year along a 200-mile freight corridor near Portland, Oregon. The initial rollout will use four electric dollies assembled with Chinese-made components.
Looking ahead, Revoy intends to establish a network of roadside swap stations where truck drivers can exchange depleted dollies for fully charged units in minutes, eliminating lengthy charging stops and improving fleet utilization.

Second-Generation Dolly Already in Development
The new investment will also finance development of a second-generation electric dolly featuring a smaller, lower-cost battery while maintaining the same driving range.
Revoy expects the improved design to lower manufacturing costs and accelerate wider commercial deployment. The company aims to have dozens of electric dollies operating by the end of next year.
$41 Million Raised to Date
The latest funding round was led by Standard Capital, with participation from Doerr Capital, Time Ventures, Y Combinator, Leap Ventures, Paul Graham, XYZ Venture Capital and other investors.
Including previous financing rounds, Revoy has now raised $41 million to support commercialization and future expansion.
Robotics Meets Freight Electrification
Revoy describes its technology as an application of robotics rather than autonomous driving. Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer Ian Rust, formerly of Cruise, says the system uses robotics to intelligently manage power delivery between the diesel engine and electric drivetrain instead of replacing the human driver.
If the company succeeds in expanding its planned swap network, the detachable electric dolly could offer a practical bridge between conventional diesel trucking and fully electric freight transport, helping fleets reduce emissions without waiting for an entirely new generation of heavy-duty electric trucks.
Why This Matters
Heavy-duty trucking is responsible for a significant share of transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions, but replacing millions of diesel trucks with brand-new battery-electric models will take years—if not decades. High purchase prices, limited charging infrastructure, and long vehicle replacement cycles continue to slow adoption.
Revoy’s detachable electric dolly offers a different approach. Instead of asking fleet operators to replace their trucks, the company enables them to electrify the vehicles they already own. That could make reducing emissions faster and more affordable while helping businesses avoid the upfront cost of purchasing new electric trucks.
If successful, the technology could serve as a transitional solution that bridges the gap between today’s diesel fleets and tomorrow’s fully electric commercial vehicles.
