Siemens and OMV Launch First SICHARGE FLEX Charging System for Electric Trucks

Siemens eMobility and OMV have officially commissioned the world’s first SICHARGE FLEX charging system at an OMV station in Kufstein, Austria, marking a significant step toward faster charging for electric trucks and passenger cars along one of Europe’s busiest transportation corridors.

The new high-power charging system was put into operation on September 29, 2026, with representatives from Siemens, OMV, customers and the Austrian government present for the launch. OMV is the pilot customer and first user of SICHARGE FLEX, which Siemens introduced in October 2025.

The Kufstein installation is designed to support the growing demand for high-power EV charging, particularly as electric trucks become more common in long-distance freight transportation.

SICHARGE FLEX is a decentralized charging system designed to provide a flexible and scalable solution for both public charging locations and vehicle depots. Its modular architecture can deliver between 480 kW and 1.68 MW, allowing charging capacity to be expanded as demand increases.

At the Kufstein location, the system initially provides four charging points for passenger cars and two charging points for electric trucks. The truck chargers can deliver up to 400 kW each.

The next expansion phase will add four more truck charging points with power levels ranging from 600 kW to 1,200 kW using the Megawatt Charging System (MCS).

That additional capacity could make a major difference for long-distance electric trucks. Siemens says a modern electric truck equipped with a 620-kWh battery could charge from 20% to 80% in approximately 45 minutes using the system. That charging window can potentially fit within drivers’ legally required rest periods, making high-power charging more practical for freight operators.

SICHARGE FLEX also uses dynamic power distribution, allowing available charging capacity to be distributed between connected vehicles according to demand.

The location is strategically positioned on the Brenner Route, an important transportation corridor connecting Germany and Italy. The route carries significant freight traffic, making Kufstein a potentially important location for the transition to electric heavy-duty transportation.

OMV has designed the site around the needs of professional drivers. In addition to its OMV eMotion charging infrastructure, the station provides amenities including showers, restaurants and washing machines.

Combining high-power charging with these services could help make charging stops more convenient for truck drivers while vehicles recharge.

The Kufstein project is not expected to remain a standalone installation. OMV has already ordered additional SICHARGE FLEX systems for locations in Austria, with deliveries and commissioning planned over the coming months.

The charging hardware will also be supported by SIFINITY Control, Siemens’ cloud-based monitoring and management platform. The system provides operators with visibility into charging infrastructure and is designed to support efficient and reliable operation.

OMV operates as both a Charge Point Operator and Mobility Service Provider across several European markets. Its charging network currently covers Austria, Hungary, Slovakia and Romania.

The expansion of systems such as SICHARGE FLEX highlights the growing focus on high-power charging infrastructure for electric trucks. As battery-electric freight vehicles move into longer-distance routes, charging stations capable of delivering hundreds of kilowatts—and eventually megawatts—will become increasingly important.

The Kufstein installation gives Siemens and OMV a real-world location to demonstrate how high-power, dynamically managed charging can support both passenger EVs and heavy-duty electric trucks on a major European transport route.
